Art: Stallion by Artist Arshad Naveed Ahsanuddin

A Royal Lipizzaner stallion being run through his paces by a trainer at Stone Mountain Park in Atlanta, Georgia. The Lipizzaner breed was orginally trained as war horses in the Middle Ages, and is now known as the "Ballerina of Horses" for its highly trained movements. The breed is especially known for its leaps, originally designed for knights to jump over their enemies in combat. The breed was saved from extinction by American General Patton at the end of World War II, and has continued to be trained to the most exacting standards in the world.

What struck me about this horse was its tightly controlled movements. Even in the rampant position shown here, it went up on its hind legs and stayed there, holding its position until signalled to drop.

The image is a digital scan of a 6 cm black and white film negative taken with a Rolleiflex Twin Lens Reflex camera.
