Art: ANNABEL LEE by Artist Kathy Hatt
Many years ago when I was attending high school, Edgar Allen Poe's works were studied in my English Class. His poem Annabel Lee was etched into my mind with it's haunting phrases of his strong love for Annabel Lee never left my memory. In my painting I try to capture the spirit of Poe's loving memeory of his Annabel Lee. "For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams Of the beautiful Annabel Lee" Great controversy exists among poet critics and Poe admirers about his use of the word see, or as some critics believe that the original word was feel, in his melancholy phrase: "And the stars never rise but I SEE the bright eyes Of the beautiful Annabel Lee" My art combines the two powerful meanings as I paint to create what Poe sees and feels. Edgar Allen Poe's poem has a magic rhythm which is interpreted in my art through the use of my technique and colors. I build color in my painting through the use of transparent glazes. Through this technique I am able to accomplish the detail and realism I strive for. This painting is a tribute to the beaufiful Annabell Lee and the magic of interminable love.
