The St. Louis Arch is the Gateway to the West--representing the unstoppable urge of our pioneers to wander westward. It's a stunning monument, visible from many parts of the city, popping up at the end of streets, or viewing down a railroad line, always reminding us of the way West to unknown lands.
I used to live in St. Louis, and the Arch was a significant part of the image of the city to me and I loved looking at it when it cropped up in view while driving, or visiting the Arch, touching the metal-clad surface and wondering at the marvel of its engineering. It is my favorite US monument, and it truly represents to me my own wanderings around the US and the world.
This is painted in watercolor on 300lb cold pressed stock, in a limited palette of graphite grey and cerulean blue.
