Art: Lust - Song of Parthenope by Artist Paula J. Nelson

My design was drawn by hand, but inspired by the 2000 promotional poster for the Sydney Theatre Company production of "The White Devil" written by John Webster. Original photograph by Sam Bisso.

Parthenope was one of the three Sirens who threw themselves into the sea after they could not lure Ulysses to ruin.

This is a training piece, above and beyond the fact that I love the poster [which I have not been able to find] but to test two things:

1. How unglazed porcelain used for flesh would play in concert with vitreous glass used for clothing and;

2. How difficult and disrupting the process of grouting 'as-you-go' would be. There are four different colors of grout on this piece at this time.

Both tests have turned out beautifully. The dull of the flesh offsets the gloss of the vitreous. None of the flesh is grouted so the space between the tesserae gives a secondary texture. As of this time I plan to leave it this way.

Not for sale or reproduction - personal collection.
