She tosses her hair, grasps her dress and strides off into the unknown. Is she a Bride? Is she the Bridesmaid? A woman scorned? Her long hair flows wildly in the wind, her bouquet almost falls from her grasp - the nostalgic sepia tones on gold illustrate the central concept - "If Only I Knew Then What I Know Now..."
Reflecting on the exhibition subject "Liberty"... a term that can represent so many things for so many people, what imagery would be evoked for an individual on a personal level then? I decided to portray this freedom as it relates to a woman... Intuitively, the first thing I felt was nostalgia - how to evoke a sense of nostalgia and what that represents? Simple sepia tones on a golden background reflecting the good old days - a golden age when everything was just perfect. A reflection upon youth, dreams, love, the freedom to choose... the freedom to be. "If I Knew Then What I Know Now..." How many times have we all said this with the benefit of hindsight? She strides with purpose, the strokes of the brush depicting the velocity, the movement... Loose fibres, the flowing fabric - femininity, vitality and attitude.
Is she running toward the love of her life? Perhaps running away from a future of restriction?
Looking back at the past, what things would we change? What things would we hold fast to - grasping it/them tighter than life itself? Ask the woman who has just lost her husband, the love of her life... or perhaps the woman that just escaped an abusive relationship?
What does she represent to you? The youthful nostalgia of liberty - to live, to love and laugh... to simply be.
