This is a colored pencil work using primarily flesh-toned Lyra pencils on black paper. Gold gouache powder adds metallic accents to the headdress.
I started reading about ancient Egypt in first grade and my interest in the ancient world has never let up. I got to visit the Berlin Museum of Antiquities in Germany and there is nothing so thrilling as standing in front of the famous bust of Nefertiti and seeing it for yourself. It is far more evocative in person than in photographs. But I wanted to portray an Egyptian prince as if he were alive today, not as a stylized artwork, a mummy or a sculpted sarcophagus, which is how we more or less see Ancient Egypt today, as a mirror of their artifacts.
