Pysanky Eggs Art Gallery

Art: Khorassan Rhea by Artist So Jeo LeBlond
Available here, this wonderfully, elaborate batik egg was made using the traditional Pysanky wax and dye process on a real blown rhea egg, which is sealed with a coat of protective, crystal clear finish. It measures approximately 5 inches tall.

The process begins by hand sanding the egg until it is silky smooth, removing all the bumps and grooves, making it so that the pores are barely noticeable. It also reveals a deeper, chaulkier layer of the egg that will allow the dyes to take more evenly and with greater intensity.

"Khorassan" is the latest installment in the "Persian Rug" series of eggs. The design features an allover repeating pattern of four cartouche-like medallions interspersed with intricate vines and flowers. The details are quite remarkable on this egg and a close up view is the only real way to appreciate the finer elements. The egg is etched to enhance the design, some areas are raised against the background to create a three dimensional effect.

PLEASE NOTE:
For those that may be interested in how such an egg comes to fruition, I have photographed some of the steps involved. Laying out the design alone took 3 full days of penciling, you can see the steps here: Khorassan Step by Step

(Photos taken with my scanner are only truly in focus directly in the center of the picture. If you see areas that appear blurry and out of focus, these are artifacts caused by the scanning process and not actual flaws with the egg.) If you require more photos, I can supply them upon request.
