"As if 'set' to fly at an instants' notice, a crow clings to a wrap of wire cable beneath a bridge. He is alert and wary and ready to go."
Artist comment: "'Set' is the second in my series on crows, the clever corvid. The bird is poised for flight. You can almost see the wings burst out, the powerful legs push away from its solitary post, and it is off to its next foray. I found this crow under a bridge along the Oregon coast. The setting was marvelous to paint! Dark slippery moss covered rocks were rendered in a yellow-green to enhance the deep black body of the crow. Although completely in shadow, there is enough reflected light on its back to model the form. Only a thin pierce of sunlight behind its head is needed to draw your attention to the subject and hold you there. The mid-values take their cue from the substrate; a sheet of gray toned Canson Mi Tientes. With its slightly textured surface, the paper enhanced the 'wildness' of the scene."
