Art: Oyster Watch by Artist Carol Thompson

A lone seagull stands above a conveyor belt at the Jolly Roger oyster processing plant on an oyster watch.

Artist comment:  In Nahcotta, Washington on Willapa Bay, is the Jolly Roger oyster company. A fleet of five oyster boats keeps things busy on a daily basis. I was intrigued by the rusty boom in contrast to the black shiny, greased chain. Rust is one of my favorite things to paint and pastel is my favorite medium to paint it. I began with an abstract background, then did the rusty boom and dark conveyor belt. Next I painted the black wheels and chain, finishing with the curious seagull. The falling oyster shells were the finishing touch.
