Art: Joyce Marie by Artist Carol Thompson

The 'Joyce Marie' glides smoothly on the Columbia River near Astoria, Oregon.

Artist comment:  The U.S. fishing vessel 'Joyce Marie' was observed heading out on the Columbia River at the Astoria/Megler bridge in Astoria, Oregon.  Most recently she was in the Gulf of Alaska.

I love painting boats of all kinds, but I have a soft spot in my heart for the hearty, hard working fishing vessels as their crews ply the sometimes treacherous waters of the Pacific Ocean to bring tuna and other seafood delights to our restaurants, groceries, and home tables.  This pastel on Canson Mi-teintes paper was a joy to paint.  I sketched the scene as I remembered it.  A sunny afternoon, warm and leisurely.  After painting the hills, bridge and water, I began the pleasurable task of rendering the boat and her details.  I added the moss covered pilings for balance and design.
