Art: Eastward by Artist Carol Thompson

The 'Eastward' moves out on the Columbia River at Astoria, Oregon, heading for a day's work!

Artist comment:  It is fair to say I have a passion for boats.  Big or small, commercial or pleasure craft, catch my eye and become subjects for my pastel paintings.  This is an early morning scene of the large vessel 'Eastward' as she heads west along the Columbia River, presumably for fishing and/or crabbing.  The beautiful sky and deep blue water set the mood on Canson Mi-Teintes paper.  I painted the misty headlands, being careful to leave bare paper where the ship was to be rendered.  The next step was to paint the water (it was a fun challenge to paint all those ripples!).  The boat was last.  I did the black hull, rust and all, then the whites.  The finishing touches were spars, railings, windows, flag, and the crates, etc.  I wish I knew more about her technically, but I know she is a beautiful craft and holds a special place in my heart.
