Art: A Walk With Isabella by Artist James Pearson
"A Walk with Isabella" was inspired by my daughter, Isabella and Chagall's paintings of his wife, Bella. Chagall continued to paint pictures of his wife many years after her death. I've always loved his commitment to love and devotion. It's a quality that too few artists cherish and choose to immortalize. My Isabella's pretty remarkable. You might also say that we're enjoying a "daddy's girl" time right now. I know it can't last forever but I wish it could. The painting is 4x4' or 48x48" for 16 sq. feet. It's big. The thick, 12 oz. canvas is "gallery-wrap" so the staples are in the rear (not visible while hanging). No additional framing is necessary, which saves the collector quite an expense. Stretchers are 3/4 inches deep and 1 1/2 inches wide. The entire surface receives several coats of gesso. The edges are painted a dark burnt umber brown. I use Utrecht premium viscosity paints which retain brushstrokes beautifully. The figures are painted in a Jackson Pollack action-style. I improvise thick, fluid lines with an Elmer's Glue Bottle filled with a lower viscosity premium paint. The figures "stand-up" from the surface because I use so much paint! It takes 2 days to dry. I then apply 2 coats of premium quality gloss varnish containing UV protection. It's extremely durable and gives the finished work a "wet, glassy" look.
