"As spring arrives on the Northwest coast of Washington State, the 'driftwood on the beach' lies scattered about, left by passing winter storms."
Artist comment: "During our years of residency in Washington State, my husband and I did a lot of travelling to sight-see and collect research material for future paintings (I have a two inch thick sketch book overflowing with drawings and notes). This painting in oil on canvas is a result of one of those memorable times. As winter storms buffet the shoreline, huge trees are undermined and fall into the surf. Smashed and battered by waves, they become driftwood washed up on sandy shores. I am fascinated by the shapes of twisted roots, counter pointed by straight lengths of a remaining trunk. I used oil on canvas to portray this chaotic scene. The 'C' composition is balanced by three 'stack' rocks. The foreground wave leads the eye into the picture and the background wave and receeding surface water strengthen the angle. I chose blue to dominate the scheme with warm brown as a complement."
