A young gull stands on the golden sand at the edge of the water, waiting and watching. Although seemingly at ease, experience tells you that in an instant it can take flight.
Artist comment: I have painted many adult seagulls in any number of flight and resting poses, but the opportunity to portray a juvenile gull was a challenge to me. This one has most of its youthful plumage, yet the feathers on its shoulders and head are beginning to turn. I made the background in warm yellow tones to harmonize with the coloration of the bird. With gouache on 140# hot-pressed watercolor paper by Arches, I was able to convey the soft, downey texture of the young bird's immature coat.
