The lead Caspian tern seems to be saying; Where's He Going?
Artist comment: I have painted ocean scenes with seagulls and pelicans for many years. I noticed Caspian terns beginning to appear on the Washington and Oregon beaches. Their unique coloring and streamlined design make them very paintable. When they take off they flock together in a tight group. That is why when I saw one going the opposite direction, it was a painting waiting to happen. This is an oil painting on canvas with the background loosely rendered to depict sky and sand dunes. I painted the Caspian terns in different wing configurations to create variety to the scene.
