"Standing at the water's edge on a winter afternoon, the wind rises, the waves build, the storm increases in intensity, and you watch awestruck as the 'rain at sea' streaks across the horizon."
Artist comment: "This painting, in oil on canvas, is one of a series called 'stormy seas' created to be published in a northwest coastal magazine. I drew on my knowledge and experience of the cliffs and ocean of the Washington and Oregon coast. Many times I have seen this kind of breathtaking activity as I stand safely high above the ocean. In my studio, later, I recalled the scene and sketched the composition with a grey mix of oil on stretched canvas. With that grey, I painted the sky and 'flat' water, highlighting the clouds and splashing water with white. The foreground rock was rendered with a palette knife for texture. I lightened that black for the background cliffs. I chose to do the translucent waves with a muted green, then finished the painting with white highlights.”
