Art: Pelicans Three by Artist Carol Thompson

Two in the surf and one gliding free, combine to become Pelicans Three!

Artist comment:  This is such a poetic scene, so I needed a poetic title.  All the while as I painted the pastel on Canson Mi-Teintes textured paper, there seemed to be no other title.  I saw this trio on the gray, wet beach at Ocean Park, Washington, as the California brown pelicans were migrating.  The warm rusty brown and black of their plumage was a great contrast to the cool background.  I sketched the birds in a triangle composition; the size of the flying pelican to balance the two standing.  Three of a kind is always a good artistic ploy.  When the birds were completed, I blended the belly of the foreground bird, and the closer wing of the flying one.  This gave them form and dimension - a nice way to finish a fun pastel painting.
