"As waves roll in on the Pacific Northwest coast, huge sprays loft high into the air above the 'offshore rocks.'."
Artist comment: "As I observe the sea from the shore, I am always aware of light and shadow and how this affects the water, splash, and rocks. This scene is a winter day when the sun is low on the horizon and the shadows are deep. The sky is a cold clear blue above gathering clouds. After sketching the basic components, I began painting with oil, the sky and clouds. Then I completed the background sea, bringing the colors forward, leaving splash areas and rocks for later. Next I painted the translucent wave and spill-over. Then I did the rock formation with a palette knife to portray their ruggedness. Later, when the paint had 'set-up', I carefully painted the foam patterns and sunlight and run-off on the rocks."
