In the early light of morning, a Great Blue Heron successfully pierces a large fish to have its big breakfast.
Artist comment: Blue Herons are one of my favorite subjects to paint. Here I was fortunate to capture on film (and thus to paint) such a rare occasion as one catching a big perch in the quiet morning light. Pastel seemed to lend itself to the soft hues of the heron, as well as the rich darks of the reflected embankment and piling. I wanted to emphasize the contrasts of the light/dark and warm/cool. The subtle triangle shapes make an interesting counterpoint to the curvy lines of the heron.
