The Unicorn is one of many iconic beasts of Medieval times. It was said a unicorn was so swift no knight could capture one without the help of a maiden.
For my mosaic I decided to construct the frame from two pieces of decorative wood. I used a traditional method of setting the stones and filling the gaps with grout. In the detail image you can see small yellow stones near the tip of the unicorn's horn. These symbolize the magical aspects of the horn. Unicorn horns were prized as an aphrodisiac and a poison detection tool.
Mosaic measures approx. 3.5 x 3.5 inches, and 6.5 x 6.5 inches with the frame.
