Art: Ripples by Artist Amanda Hone
I've always loved the amazing variety of colours that the UK Machin postage stamp has been printed in. This collage is created with 26 different value stamps, all of which have been used and franked by the post office. The British stamps are the only stamps in the world that do not have the name of the issuing country printed on them. Just the value and the miniature engraved portrait of the Queen by Arnold Machin. Some of these stamps are pre-decimalization when the UK still used guineas, pounds, shillings and pence. The pennies were denoted by the letter d which stood for denarius. These were the pennies that the Romans brought to Britain when they first invaded our shores.
