Did something a little different for me and painted a couple of landscapes.  These two paintings have been submitted for the Unique Views of Huntsville exhibit which is set to take place in a few weeks here at the Huntsville Museum of Art.  I'll find out end of next week if they are accepted, keeping fingers and paws crossed!

The reference for these views was photographed by a friend of mine that works on Redstone Arsenal, I cannot go onto the arsenal on my own as I don't work there, but had been there with Bil recently and saw the sunflower fields and really wanted to do some paintings of them.  So, my friend, also a painter, stepped up for me and got the photos.

They are each 8x10 acrylics on canvas.

oh, sorry!  Redstone Arsenal is an army base here in town...it's one of the reasons Von Braun chose this spot for the Marshall Space Flight Center (a NASA facility), which is also located on the Arsenal, that's where my husband works.  However, since it's on an army base, I don't have privileges to get past the guard gates, unless I'm with someone who works on the arsenal.  It's a huge base, and there is a good bit of farmland on it.  I wasn't expecting to see these sunflower fields, so pretty.

They are certainly amazing!  Are they planted?  reseeded?  I can certainly understand why you want to paint them!  I do!

wow, thanks y'all!  Thinking I should probably then put this discussion in technique, but, since we're here...

I have had some comments on texture lately, and these, especially the first view, I did a lot of palette knife again.  I'm finding I really like that with the acrylics on these smaller pieces.

However, I was working on another painting, a larger piece, I think it's an 18x24, and I had to totally go over it with oils because at that size the acrylics were driving me nuts.

It's weird, I like the really bright colors and can get that on the smaller ones and I like how they look, and it's easier to do that with the acrylics because you don't have to worry about muddying so much as you work.  I can layer the more pure colors rather quickly.  But, when I worked acrylics and palette knife on a larger canvas it just came out looking garish to me and I couldn't get the color mixing the way I wanted it and not the subtlety I was looking for.    And I think it was just drying too fast as I was working over a larger space and that wasn't always what I wanted, lol.

So, I guess I'll be staying small with the acrylics for now, which is nice for starting landscapes too, less intimidating.

Also, with landscapes, I find I have a hard time deciding just what to put in the painting, know what I mean?  There often seems to be extra "stuff" that I don't necessarily want to put in it, but, I guess that's also a learning curve, and a question of looking at the big picture and not so much specifics.

Just rambling this morning...

Your vision, your landscape, your perspective. These are both wonderfully composed, same subject but ever so different. I think both compostions are outstanding Tracey. Trust your own eye, you've got a good one!
Personally I like the first one better, but I'm drawn to hay bales. It's perfectly framed with the trees, the hay bales draw your eye in take the eye to the horizon, where you have a wonderful vanishing point, the shadow in the front gives it a "perfect" feeling of a lazy late afternoon. The color is so realistic, without being boring.
I want to walk up to the tree and see what is over the hill.

Very well done Tracey.

I love the choice of colors for this painting.  The word balmy comes to mind, it also reminds me of Pierre Bonnard.  Lovely piece of artwork.

Got some good news in the mail today...That first landscape with the hay bales got accepted into the Unique Views of Huntsville exhibit.  woo hoo!

I'll be one of those in charge of hanging this exhibit at the Huntsville Museum of Art end of next week.

Just happy to have been juried in.
