Did everybody give up   That looks more African to me Heather, I like the blue, it gives it an ocean feel. If I could add one more thing, I would like to see the background the color of sand.

But hell that's just me, it's your painting...........LOL

LOL.........you crack me up Heather, I like that as well. Still looks African to me. I can't wait to see what you do with this as the dark, earthy colors are really different for you.

this may be it for objects!!!  I do think I like sticking with the original runner I had..  was going to go mad with too many choices..  I think now its just spacing these right and arranging the fruit right..  can't mess around with this much longer.. my oranges, lime and lemon are on their last days and about to go yucky!

thanks Lisa!!!

Heather, I really really like the arrangement of the objects and I can't wait to see how this looks as a painting. I trust you're going to do a wip for us...

Blue gray would be neutral enough to work...but if I were working with all these earthy awesome African objects (envy) I would probably go with something a little warmer, to play on the rich tones without washing them out. I'm afraid with too cool and neutral a background you might lose something...I know I'm vague! The coolness of the plant kind of balances everything out, esp. with the lime opposing it...I wouldn't want that get lost in the background. Just my .02 :)

I still like the color of sand for the background Would love to see it stay very neutral and earthy (I know I use that word alot, but it reminds me of Africa)

Would the gray/blue, be closer to gray or blue?

I think it would be good to have contrast,,,to make the african man pop out a bit more. I liked the colorful matt,,but like this one as well. I like a nuetral background for a certain feel,,,but I think it would be nice to balance that orange down there with a copper type of color,,,as you had suggested to your own self

I love the addition of the fruit,,,it is all looking very organic and earthy,,,How fun to watch the ideas culminate on the screen I haven't commented much lately heather,,,but I think your work is getting really good,,,very sellable,,,it is fascinating to see the process,,,on fast forward as it seems to be,,,right before our eyes. Your dedication is really paying off,,,thanks for sharing so much of it too,,,it is inspirational

OMG, I didn't realize how much this thread had grown!
Seriously, Heather, you want more advice?! ROFLMAO
OK then, here's my opinion (I know you're sleeping now, I was bleaching shells earlier...)
I like everything you've got there, but I would put the basket back on the plant, unless you hide the pot completely. It's a nice pot, but a totally different style.
For the fabric, I think the purple or the blue work better. The runner is the same earthy shades as the mask and the medicine man, and they disappear, the mask especially.
I liked the original plate better for the fruit. It will be hard to tell what this one is in a painting. Hell, it's hard to tell what it is now... It's very cool, but looks better without anything on it.
An earthy background would be nice (like the color of the medicine man's tunic) and maybe you could pick up some of the red in the mask... if you change the cloth to something brighter, otherwise it won't work.
You know what the problem is with those little bottles? They're the same shape and size as the lemons, and it all becomes too much. If you use them again (and I hope you will, they're cool), use different shaped fruit, bananas, peppers...
I liked a lot of the stuff you showed in the beginning: the skinny people, the long thin colorful masks, even the Nigerian mask would look good in a still life. Not crazy about the big masks because of the gold. Not a big fan of gold accents like that.
I love that orange and yellow bottle you showed late yesterday (11pm here) (4th pic below the Nigerian mask) and the tall reddish mask with all the little carved giraffes at the top.
Anyway, go for it, I'm sure it'll be beautiful!

Well, there you have it Heather,,,,you have a lot of varied info and opinions and like with parenting books you have to figure out what works for your style and sensibilities. It always helps to study other people's works,,,not to copy,,,but to figure out what you think works or doesn't work in them. It will help you to develope a critical eye for your own compositions,,,

Are there any good art museums out by you? I haven't a clue about Duetchland culture and arts.

Yep what Heidi said, this has been fun and I so enjoy the different opinions. To me that's what art is all about, if we all had the same opinion it would be oh so boring.

In the end you are the one that has to be happy with it

Ok ladies!!!  Love the input.. its staying as is..  muriel.. I liked the bright purple cloth in the beginning. and thanks so much for your input!!!  all will go to my memory bank for the next one!!!. but at this point I've gotten too many choices.. Also knowing that i"m a painting mad woman and will churn out way more with this African stuff..  I'm not worried b/c there will be many more down the road..  I won't choose this mask again.. or not for a long time b/c I used it.. so I'll be back to square one with my next one..  I think these things will pop way more in the painting than the photo.. as I usually exaggerate any colors I see popping from the dull colors.. I do think I can make this work and not be too dull or neutral.. as that is not me to be too blanded down..  Now I haven't started yet.. I just have my blank gessoed canvas right now.. but to start sketching..  hopefully I can start getting some paint to the canvas before all ya'll wake up over there.  And hopefully I can pull something decent out.. as now I've put lots of pressure on myself!!

Thanks Ladies!!!!!!
