Nope, not Matisse. Not a French artist.
Hint: this artist is known for work that is a lot less organic than this piece (the opposite of the O'Keeffe, eh eh eh )

The date is 1910.
European male artist, better known for his later work which doesn't look like this at all.
Not French, not Matisse, not Picasso.
There's a sig at lower left.

The trunk does look like Van Gogh, but this is later.
However, you're getting way warmer as far as the country of origin!
