Actually Copics are alcohol based too, what interests me about them is that they're refillable, so I suppose in the long run the hideous price evens out somewhat over time (although they are much cheaper online and during sales).

I feel bad that I've hijacked this face a day discussion so here's another I did for the last challenge:

This one is all in pencil, his name is Eyeballs McGillicuddy

Se that is what I am talkin about. My markers bleed a little through the page also, but then again I never intend to show the back before I sell it or frame it. Nice work Vicky!

Thanks Alma!

I was thinking that maybe for the ACEOs the backs shouldn't have marker coming through, but maybe it isn't a problem if Sherry hasn't had any complaints.

I got my test set of the Spectrum Noirs (supposedly a cheaper version of Copics) and tested them out, they seem to bleed a little more than my Copic & prismacolor. Also I noticed some inconsistency - there were 6 markers in this set (+ one blender) and one color's fine tip was very sharp & thin, but a different color was much broader & bled more. So I'm not sure about them - what I'd really like is a good marker that offers very thin lines, that's what I do like about the brush tip is it offers that option. Prismacolor now makes a brush tip, I'd like to try that out as well. I think if I'm just using these for underpainting and primarily in conjunction with colored pencil I don't really need an enormous selection, just some sort of base colors. I drive myself nuts with overthinking everything!

Vicky I just happened to think, Have you ever tried pentel brush pens. I think that I paid about 5 buck ea and they applied like a real paint brush, loved the color intensity, they are refillable. Blending was ok but the reason I did not get them anymore was 2 fold, 1 I wore out the brushes after 1 refill, and they were water, and alcohol solvable...something that doesn't work real well with me.

Also on a side note I am finishing up a pic on smooth recycleable bristol and got to say, though I don't know why, it is not as nice a surface for the markers and cp as was the regular non recycled I used in the 2 above.

I haven't tried those Alma, but just did a little more research. I don't know if I'm crazy about a water based pen - were they waterproof when dry? I also couldn't get a clear answer as to whether or not they're fade resistant (I read in one place that they were dye based as opposed to pigment, which would mean that they're more likely to fade. Also their price now is right up there with the copics, at least from what I could see.

This led me to the Faber Castell Pitt brush pens/big brush pens - I may give these a try. Not only are they affordable, ($2.55 each at Dick's I think) they got high ratings and are pigment based. They don't appear to be refillable, but that's ok. I don't know about blending and their color range is limited 58 in total, but that's ok for me since doing finished marker work isn't my goal anyway. Also I read that they don't bleed through the back of the paper, so I'm definitely going to give these a try! Thanks for pointing me down this road :)

I think I may go to the Jerrys store and talk to them, hopefully get to try some of these out. I called the other day & they said they test out all of the copic imitations, so they should be able to advise me.

Wow, I've been too busy to even get on the internet this weekend. I have missed a lot of good conversation.

Vicky love the Octopus and Alma, love the kitties!!

I have a couple of new faces to post. I'm playing with some new little characters called "Offworlders." I've done about eight so far. Right now I am doing the workers and professionals that travel off world with the Royals.

The Bird and the Honey Bee Keeper" This one is the Royal Honey Bee Keeper. Her job is to transport the hives, taste test the honey, etc. She'll be traveling with her trained pet bird on her shoulder.

The Bird and the Honey Beekeeper:

One who sees all, and knows it all...

The Blue Moon Seer:

I know everyone is different but I like it that my marker shows through. I just feel it gives an air of authenticity...lol. That's just me personally. But then I like painting and drawing outside the lines too.

Vicky after I posted about thinking the Copic were water based I was at the art supply store, and saw they were alcohol based like you said. AND, they went up from 6.99 to 7.99. I would like to try the watercolor markers, the good quality ones are expensive too.

I love the beekeeper Sherrie? Do you think of the stories first then draw the figures? Really nice work!

Thanks Alma! Well, it's a little bit of both as far as the stories. Sometimes I have a thought in mind that I want to try and portray, but sometimes it starts developing in my head as I am working on the art, or I wait for the words to come to me that best fits (in my mind) the artwork. I like trying to think up little sick, or funny stories...you know what I mean (I know you do...)

I know this is an old cliche but I have had some major tragedies in my life, and it is great therapy and makes me feel GOOD to think I might make someone smile, or cringe (in a cute way) with my art.

Here is two more new ones:

"Bluebird Keeper" Bluebirds are messengers but they are only allowed to transport good news...what!? This is my world and I can have them do whatever I want them too. The bluebird eggs are poisonous. Good thing for them, they don't ever have to worry about their eggs getting eaten.

"Offworld Nurse Maid" Well, unfortunately, Offworlders need nursemaids and nannies as much as the rest of the world(s). They do have robots that can do the job fairly well but there is a major faction of Offworlders that are big believers in going natural when it comes to raising children. This one is swathed in a natural fiber cocoon.

Sherry that's cool that you're creating a consistent "other world" with your drawings!

Back to the markers (this should be my last post on them or I'd just create a new discussion on them), I just wanted to share what I discovered, although it may not really matter since you two (Alma & Sherry) are already set with what you use.

I went to the Jerry's store yesterday - I had pretty much made up my mind to get the Faber Castell Pitt brush pens, but the store was much more expensive than online so I just bought a 6-pack as well as a couple of other things to test, and it's a good thing I did! While the brush pens are very nice for drawing (crisp lines, bright colors, no soaking through or bleeding), I found that the India ink does not take colored pencil well! When I tried putting down a larger solid area, the coverage was splotchy (this could be because I was using the smaller pens) and this was not easily "fixed" with colored pencil. I then went back & gave my 2 prismas another try (I found a second one) and found that they were even better than the copic for a smooth, non streaky surface. What's more, Prismacolor now makes brush tipped markers (dual tip with a fine point as opposed to chisel, which I never liked) so I went and ordered a set (open stock they're only $2.55 each but I went and ordered a set so that I wouldn't have to decide). I didn't find my one Copic to be significantly better than the Prisma on any count other than appearance, which although it's nice to have a pretty marker it isn't critical. I'm not sorry that I bought the Pitts, I'll still be able to use them but just not the way I had intended.

So anyway in the spirit of posting faces, here's my little experiment using the pitt brush pen & colored pencil (which I had to struggle with). It's enlarged, the actual image is about 1.5" tall:

That is darned cute and tiny!

Well, thanks for testing some of this out so I don't have too.

I guess I will have to try a brush tip before I pass judgement. I didn't think I would like them I guess because I have gotten use to the fine/broad tips. I didn't know Prisma made a brush tip. I forget we have another art store down the street that has a lot of open stock so I might go try just one.

That's the only thing about Hobby Lobby and Michaels. They don't have a lot of open stock on anything.

I don't know if Alma wants us to start a different post about different tools and techniques. I'm good either way. Kind of enjoying it though.

Just so I'll be legal I'll post another face. I cheated and copied and pasted my story from my profile.

These were pen and marker since we are kind of talking along those lines.

These were 27, 28 in the 29 Faces challenge. I was going to call this "Dr. Odd and his Assistant" but one of the guys at work said "That's cool, she looks just like a hippie." So I ended up going with "Drodd" (get it...ha, ha, ha), and "Hippie Chick." I think my favorite part of these two is the Granny Glasses and the way she is giving you the "double evil eye" over the rims.

I liked the expressions on these. They are Prisma markers and Micron pens.

I remember these, actually I think the girl looks more like a scientist than a hippie, although I can see it that way too. Good job! Are these on Bristol?

I'm going to sed if I can do a marker/cp face tonight with my limited resources!

Sherry the double chins crack me up! You and I share a common approach, as I find to I start with one idea the the art tends change itself as I work with it. I usually don't write the story until I list the piece here on EBSQ

I have a couple more also, but I am not going to take the time to upload them tonight, as is is a hundred million degrees in here (even though we have central air) and I am going to go and lay down in the bedroom early tonight.

I don't know what your experience is with brush & ink but it does take a little practice if you've never used it before. When I was in cartoon school we had to learn to ink with a brush (the brush markers were just coming out back then, but were frowned upon & didn't use India ink) so it's something I'm familiar with.

Here's my experiment I did last night, just another kitty, in purple again:

I could have taken more care when doing the body but I was still testing out the marker/CP combo.

Ive also found that the markers don't soak through as much on Stonehenge, as they do on Bristol, interestingly.

First and foremost I am learning just as much with the marker end of this discussion as the faces, so I don't mind a bit. BTW Vicky I found at one point I must have purchases a prisma dual marker in the very same color as I use as base for my faces, so I will try that on the next one and let you know if it is better or worse with CP than Dick Blick

Here is one of my faces...I was feeling a bit flighty last night and thus da birds!lol

Vicky that is so darn cute! It looks finished to me, but I know what you mean, if you are the one doing it you know whether you've reached the point or not that you consider it finished. I'll try out the brush tip eventually but have too many others to experiment with at the moment.

Alma, those are great!  They look like they could almot glow in the dark.

I have this thing where I find it hard to post an artwork if I don't have something to say about it besides what the materials are.

I always have a back log of art to post on my blog because of that.

I don't like it when an artist does write something. It is hard but I think that the potential patron needs to see, your passion about art. Afterall you are trying to say something and don't want to leave them hanging. I heard some where the standard advice it talk about your art, be silent about your poetry. That is absolutely counterintuitive to what I want to do, but it does make sense.

I do understand what you are saying and I guess it depends on the venue too. I am mostly talking about my blog. Followers love the stories even if it's just a sentence.

I understand that if my work was being seen in a Gallery that it would definitely need to speak for itself.

Occasionally it's coming up with a title that stumps me, or takes some extra time, and keeps me from posting. Sometimes I have a title that gives me the idea, and sometimes I have the idea and the naming of it was the farthest thing from my mind.

I would just hate to put "untitled" on everything.

Sometimes the title alone helps them get "it."
