No they are just Dick Blick brand. I usually try and buy the most common brand, however Copic Markers are so far out of my league! Hurts to even dream about it, until I know what I am doing...even then. I use them pretty much as an underpainting for the color pencils. Vicky can you post some of your pics from the 29 day challenge you did, I really want to see some of your faces too!

Ok sure, I'll post some tomorrow!

I didn't realize the copics were that much more expensive, are they really better than the other brands? Have you used prismacolor or Chartpak ad markers? I'm wondering how those compare to the dick blicks.

I used a few Prisma markers, Pentel brush markers (love those but they are easily waterspotted) Fibracolor really cheap I used those as "fillers" and final shadowing they were the only ones that seems to stick to color pencils. Working with Dick Blick marker for just one day this is what I can tell you, they don't seem to run...they do ok with blending, however I had to purchase the blender separately And I am using a vellum type finish it will be interesting to try them out on some smooth bristol, They do have really good color saturation and very little streaking. All and all I really like them, good for the money.

Over the weekend I had some questions as to whether I am screwing myself up with some of these. I wanted more expression in my cats, and then upon review I decided that they do have expression, dead pan as it maybe, and that that is part of there charm. But then again I just am having to much fun with these portraits and I could just start a different series....maybe we will see anyway here is my new vanilla spice kitty

Love the Kitty! I was laughing when you said this. I have been developing a new character but noticed the majority of them have similar expressions, so I thought they wouldn't work for face a day here because you said they should be all about expression.

I was concentrating more in creating different surroundings and others things besides expression.

Like Vicky, I might list a few of my favorites I did during the 29 Faces challenge as well.

I use a LOT of Prismacolor markers because like you said, they are about half the price of Copics. I know some of the basic colors in Copics are refillable, also they are supposed to have more blendability than Prisma. I have to admire Copics from afar also.

I haven't tried the Dick Blick but sounds like you are pretty impressed with them so might be worth a shot to try those as I get low on some of the others. Did you say lightfast, or no? Can't remember.

I just looked they are listed as fade resistant, I do use a uv spray block on my work so I don't get overly concerned. I should say though that one of the review loved the dick blick but stated one downside was it didn't seem to "play" well with the others. I am very happy, the best color saturation I have seen so far. Please do post some, I too want to see others take on this face of the day!

OK now you've gotten me intrigued by the markers again, I do like the idea of speeding up a colored pencil drawing this way. I did a little research & read that the Dick Blicks didn't blend all that well, how are you finding them for blending Alma? How detailed do you get with the marker underpainting (for lack of a better term)? What other brands have you used/tried? How do the prismas compare to the Dick Blick? In my research I came across another brand that is reasonably priced and got very good reviews, it's called Spectrum Noir, have you heard of them? I bought a very small set on ebay to test them out.

The other thing about markers that can be an issue is paper, if it's too absorbent it gets blotchy. But you're using regular sketchbook paper Alma? It doesn't soak through and get blotchy? What paper do you like best for finished CP/marker work? I know you use wood too but how about paper?

Here is a face, but I am mostly posting it to show the Prismacolor markers I used. This was one I did the face and neck entirely in marker. I used marker for the Face, and sky/blue background. The dress, hair and tree are colored pencils.

It takes a little practice and you have a shorter period of time to blend Prisma markers (best to blend while they are still pretty juicy, in a small area at a time). I mostly use smooth Bristol paper for my ACEO sized artworks seems to work pretty well with markers.

I use markers in some small part most of the time, for backgrounds, or pieces and parts in most of my drawing type paintings, if they are on paper.

Thanks Sherry! It's a little hard to see since your pic is rather small (it gets pixelated when I zoom in) but the markers look good, I assume they soak through the back? Do you ever do cp over the marker?

I use bristol also, and yes I would say the dick blick is a bit of a challenge to blender but easiser with the colorless blender (sold separately) Here is the thing though, if you are going to be using color pencil over markers you should probably go with the Dick Blick, as for some reason blending with color pencil is so much easier over a layer of marker, I don't know why, also I am able to draw in white highlights over even the dark colored markers with DB that is a big plus for me. I am just about finished with 2 fully saturated11x14" cat pictures that I started on Sunday, usually that would be a week and a half to 2 weeks with out markers, and even longer if I did not use the Inktense color pencil by Derwent.

Sherrie love that one. Did you leave a white space before you put on the cheek color or did you do one over top the other? Very nice!

Why Dick Blick instead of a different brand, if DB is more of a challenge to blend? I think CP is easier to blend over the marker because you don't have to worry as much about covering up the white of the paper, do you think that's it?

I've done a little experimenting and I do like the way the CP alters the texture of the paper just a little.

How detailed do you get with the marker?

I bought DB because it was all I could afford. Normally I do go with one of the recommend brands when purchasing a new medium...but holy crap that was outta my league, at the price it outta make me coffee too. It does work better than my cheapy, and I can't say the white parts I just know I like it better. I took a WIP pic of my next face and will try to post tommorow then you will see the amount of detail ect.

Oh ok thanks. I thought there might be a reason other than price. Maybe there's something inbetween db & copic? I'll let you know what I think of that other brand I mentioned too

Sorry for hijacking this thread, I'll post some of mine this weekend (I've been very busy)

Here is my FTD "Emma Jean" at just the marker stage. This is on Vellum Bristol so it is a little more absorbant than I would like.

THanks for posting that Alma, it's a little looser than I expected. When you finish her up can you post the two side by side?

I'm posting one of my Alma-inspired experiments here, (I'll put up some from the 29 faces challenges tomorrow). I really want to be able to do the marker/cp method, I think it might be very helpful to me. I have one Copic marker, and one Prismacolor marker (one that I could find at least). I actually have many prismas but they're scattered throughout the house in various stages of dehydration, I never thought I'd find a good use for them, and if I do more with this technique I'll be kicking myself as I recently donated a huge marker stand (with several tiers & holes for over 100 markers).

Anyway for this one I used my two markers, colored pencil, graphite, and conte pencil on bristol (I forget if it's smooth or vellum, but I used the smoother side). You're right, starting with the marker was a HUGE timesaver! The only thing I don't like is that it does bleed through even the bristol, I don't know how much of a difference this makes when selling drawings like this.

Verrrry cute Vicky! I don't have a larger view (that I can find) of the girl with the bees and trees. I sold it ,and I can't find the original scan at the moment.

Prismacolor markers are one of the middle price ranges I think. I have collected them two or three at a time. They are usually 3.99 each and copic is 6.99 each. I probably have about 30 Prismas now and about ten off brands.

Also, I have probably used marker in some form on the last 100 ACEOs I have done and no buyer has ever mentioned the bleedthrough on the back. If anything I think it would prove it's an original...lol.

Here is one of my 29 Faces, marker with colored pencil over it, except for the face.

I think the reason it fills in quicker and better is that the marker puts color in all the little interstitial spaces that you would normally have to use more layers and pressure to fill in so it is solid.

Prisma doesn't have brush tips (not the ones I use anyway), they have a fine tip on one end and a broad tip on the other.

I have a colorless marker blender but haven't found it all that useful with Prismacolor markers. I think prisma color markers are alcohol based and pencils blend well with them especially when they are wet.

Copics are water based and maybe that is why the markers blend more easily with each other..

Gee, I think this would make a good subject to blog about.
