They kinda of blend together, however pop surrealism seems to be the newest term for low brow. Plus I think it just plain explains it better.

No I don't think that that is quite right...I think they are two separate groups. I think of outsider art with flux brute avant gaurd (FBAG) and (FBAG) as being sort of the steampunk for the 60's era. I found the definition below as describing it quite well also. (i included the whole statement this time seeing I am having no luck with links these days. Personally I believe there should be both a Flux Brute Avant Garde and a Pop Surrealism each able to stand on thier own and maintain separate identities.

In fine art, the term "avant-garde" (from the French for 'vanguard') is traditionally used to describe any artist, group or style, which is considered to be significantly ahead of the majority in its technique, subject matter, or application. This is a very vague definition, not least because there is no clear consensus as to WHO decides whether an artist is ahead of his time, or WHAT is meant by being ahead. To put it another way, being avant-garde involves exploring new artistic methods, or experimenting with new techniques, in order to produce better art. The emphasis here is on design, rather than accident, since it seems doubtful that a painter or sculptor can be accidentally avant-garde. But what constitutes 'better' art? Does it mean, for instance, painting that is more aesthetically pleasing? Or more meaningful? Or more vividly coloured? The questions go on and on!

I agree with Alma, I don't know why you'd want to do that as they're not the same thing. Whenever I'm not sure I usually take a look at the artists who are considered part of that style and I wouldn't consider anything I've seen by "fluxus" artists to be considered pop surrealism. Art Brut is more "outsider art" (the real outsider art), naive, that sort of thing.

I also agree that "pop surrealism" is a better category name to use than "Lowbrow". While both are often used interchangeably, I think of Lowbrow as a subset of pop surrealism. Actually a lot of Lowbrow could also be considered kitsch, but not all kitsch would be considered pop surrealism!

Thanks for the colored pencil gallery! I hope to add some stuff this weekend when I have time

I've personally never heard coloured pencil referred to as painting as opposed to drawing. Doesn't mean that it isn't; just that I've never seen it referenced that way before.

When drawing with colored pencils and blending colors on layers of color spmetimes it has the feel of painting rather than drawing.  It still seems to be dry media but maybe the waxiness of Prisma color can put it in another category.

It would depend on the technique being used.  Heavy application of color in the colored pencil kinds would be more painting maybe.  But then watercolor can have a light feel.

Generally to me anything dry is drawing and anything wet is painting.

Colored pencils can be used wet or dry. Also pastels are dry, yet called "painting", and where does that leave oil pastels, which aren't "wet", nor are they ever really dry?

Either way it doesn't matter since Amie did create a colored pencil gallery already!
