Etsy announced a new feature today: Direct Checkout. It's a way for you to accept credit cards without going through Paypal. They are planning to have sellers opt in and to phase it in as a new feature over the next few months.

Check this link for links to Etsy announcement and how it works:

I've read through everything and I think this will be a great thing---when they finish it. I personally don't think it's finished.

1. They haven't set up a way for the funds to be put toward your Etsy Bill.

2. They haven't set up a shipping function--so you have to have money in your bank account to pay for shipping ahead of time, since you won't have access to the funds you make immediately.

They hint in the Etsy blog that this will eventually give rise to Etsy Gift Cards--this would be awesome. But they don't give a timetable for anything--because obviously they are not done. LOL

Hopefully by the time they roll out Direct Checkout to everyone, they will have worked out any bugs and added more functionality. As it stands now, I wouldn't use it--I live off a very limited income--so having the Paypal shipping feature is HUGE for me.

But I'm looking forward to having an option other than Paypal in the future.

This is indeed awesome. It would be nice if this method really took off and would pressure other sites like Ebay to follow suite. Of course since Ebay is so closely connected to Paypal and is so money hungry...that probably won't happen.

Update-this kind of irritates me...when I made this post just now it automatically created a link to Ebay...they are probably making money off of that too. Just talking about them gets them business. We need to come up with a shortcut word for E_ _ _.

This is great news, esprcially since reading the post about Paypal shutting down someone's account for no reason!!!!  Now if that happens, we are not held hostage by 1 company!!!!

I think most people know who you are talking about if you just use the term "Fee-Bay", and that doesn't get linked (though it would be funny if it did!)

This sounds interesting. I agree with Joe that it would be nice to have more than one way to accept payments. I was upset by the thread about closing someone's Paypal account for no reason. This new checkout at Etsy is something that is really encouraging. Although, I think I will wait awhile before signing up for it. I want to wait for the bugs to get worked out.

I'll be waiting too. I wouldn't be able to use it till they sorted out some sort of shipping module to go with it. I think it's great step forward though and can't wait till it develops more.

Sounds good! I too was getting worried about Paypal's throwing people under the train for no reason...
Now I know why many peeps here call it Fee-bay!

Resurrecting this topic since it's in effect now. I signed up for it, but I guess I didn't read all the fine print and made a sale with the direct checkout for a custom painting - UH OH!! They won't transfer the payment until the painting is shipped? What was I to do?? I had to pay for the materials, canvas, etc... so I hit the "shipped" button. I'll know by Friday if they are going to release my funds. I'm not worried about the customer because I already let them know how long the process for create the painting will take and will send them an image before I send it.

So - have any of you used the feature yet and if so, tell us what you think.

Oy! That is an issue! I know a lot of people who create their item to order after the work has been purchased. Let us know how long it takes them to release the funds!

My etsy seller account says the funds will be released tomorrow. I hope so.

If all goes well, I think I will add a paragraph in my listing stating that for custom orders, your item will be marked as shipped when I start working on your piece but that it will be ___ days before the painting is finished and I will email an image for approval before actually shipping.

Hopefully all will work fine by doing this. The customers won't have a problem with it. Etsy must be trying to install some safety nets to prevent fraud but didn't think it all out very well. They should have consulted with the people doing custom work first! LOL

I received an email saying I could sign up for it, but I am worried about glitches just like that. I think I will wait a while before I jump on that particular bandwagon!! I hope it all works out for you!

To update on the transaction - after I noted that it was shipped (which it really wasn't), 3 days later they started the transfer process. It took about 2-3 days to appear in my bank account, and I'm about to ship the painting tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I listed the custom piece again and noted in the listing that if the buyer selected direct checkout, the item will show as being shipped shortly after, but that will not be the case (etc). That's to cover myself if anyone questions it. Most people understand that you have to create the art so I think that will be fine.

I did, however, get another order from the new listing, and they used direct checkout. So, yes, that is two in about 7 days. I'm going to list another one right now due to some other committments, but I commented to my husband that it just "might" be because people are put off by using paypal and direct checkout welcomes people. Something to take note of.

On the flip side, as before, I had to note that it has been shipped and remember that in three days I need to transfer the money to my account, so it will be around the 22nd before that money is in the bank. It's almost as if I'm waiting for a check to clear, but at least I don't have to hold my breath and hope.

Hope someone can find this info useful. :)

Yes, thank you Melanie.
That's quite an oversight on Etsy's part, but I like your solution.

Okay, I am always the last to try something new. I was concerned of some of the glitches regarding shipping, payment, and Etsy customer service regarding problems, so I thought I would just stick with PayPal. Well, this has been the slowest sales season I have had on Etsy. I had received a note from Etsy admin stating sales overall were better for Direct checkout sellers but of course I thought it was BS so I would sign up. Reluctantly, I signed up for Direct Checkout. I have sold three paintings since joining Friday night. Both customers were new to Etsy.com and used direct checkout. I guess they were right when they said customers might overlook my shop and go to one that accepted direct checkout. Hopefully the upward trend in sales will continue.

I have not been paid by Etsy yet. I am waiting for the initial bank account set up and confirmation.

Torrie

I just signed up as well, for the same reasons.
They do say that your first payment would take several days (I forgot how many) but subsequent ones should be speedier. Good luck, Torrie!

Thanks Muriel

I couldn't help but be a little depressed about the slow sales. It would be nice if they picked up. I have a hospital bill coming this month that I am going to be scared to open!

OH this is interesting. I just asked in another thread if you guys liked direct checkout. I didn't realize it might increase sales. That is an incentive. I need sales. I have a whopping grand total of 7 sales since 2007....I am doing pretty bad. sigh.

I haven't actually tried it yet. I just signed up today so I could give printing pre-paid labels another try, and you read how that worked out.
But it makes sense that if it gives people who don't have or like Paypal another way to pay with credit, then I'm all for it. Anything that makes it easier for people to buy my stuff, I like.

I have been printing address labels for quite a while. I have a little bit of digital art in the corner, and I think it looks more professional than hand-written, and is also more legible for the postal machines. Handwriting adds a homey touch these days, though, so it's really up to you what your style is. I do add a handwritten note in the package with the art and the COA.

Congrats on the new sales with direct checkout. Looking back, most of the sales I have had since it started were DC. Last month I received a notice that I had enough sales that no longer do I have the wait period that I had at first. So for those hesitant to try it, don't wait. I still marked my pieces as "shipped" even tho they were commissions and I had no problems at all. Happy new year!
