From the link Jeanne posted seems like you can't take no for an answer, have to be persistent (as politely as you can). This really bites the big one and sounds like the majority of us are in the same boat as far as our Paypal activity.

The only other suggestion I might have is turn them over to the Better Business Bureau. You can do it online.

I did that with Sprint because they were saying I renewed my contract by NOT replying back to one of the snail mails they sent me. They were charging me 290.00 because I went with another service and supposedly renewed my account with them by omission.

While Sprint never admitted they were wrong THEY suddenly back tracked and out of the "kindness of their hearts" cleared it off my records. Point being the BBB did force them to open up communication with me.

Don't forget the old standby, "I want to speak to your supervisor" (or other person in authority, or boss). It might/might not help.

If there is something in their policy that allows them to abruptly delete your account for reasons that are in NO way your doing, they would have NO problem telling you what the reasons are.

If it were me, I would go to my attorney and contact the local news if my attorney didn't advise me to hold off on that. The fact that they refuse to give you any reason tells me there is NOTHING in their policies that allow them to take such action and they are hoping you will just quietly go away.

Kick and scream, Tiff - Do NOT go quietly.

I think that link that Jeanne posted had some helpful info, I bookmarked it in case I'm ever in that situation.

On that link they also showed a list of issues that could possibly be "flags" to paypal, a lot of which were relatively minor. At first I assumed that none of those things would apply to me, until I read them. For example, I never had my bank account "confirmed" because I didn't ever want them to have the ability to withdraw money, for any reason. We also still haven't given them our SS #'s for tax purposes, mainly because we haven't gotten around to it and know that we don't make enough for them to report, but still it's little things like that which could bring us under their scrutiny. I'll have to go over the list more carefully because I really don't want this to happen to us too.

This sounds awful.  I would fight tooth and nail, but sorry it has come to this.  It all scares me enough I saved Jeanne's link!  Good luck, do not take this lying down.

I saved Jeanne's link too. I HAVE always had a balance in my Paypal account and my bank account is confirmed. I didn't like having my bank account confirmed because if Paypal wanted to, they could take money out of my account without my permission. But fortunately I only gave them an account that I don't keep much money in.

I was going to tell a story of what happened to a seller I knew with Paypal but I decided my (sometimes) Obssessive/Compulsive behavior was coming to the fore.

This is outrageous! but considering they are earned by Ebay, and my recent experience with their handling of my copyright situation, They are on the top of my list of evil corporations. But that said losing your paypal or ebay rights is an awfully heavy penalty. I am sorry Tiff!

Amanda,

This is the best news I've received in a LONG time!! Thank you for this. It's true--soon people will be able to pay on ETSY with a credit card without being re-routed to paypal! Hooray for ETSY!

I've also been researching alternatives to paypal. So far I've found that on most sites that I thought would only take Paypal, there are other options. Paypal will not ever receive another dime from me.

I did find out what really happened though so this may put some of you at ease. Basically someone got access in to my e-bay account in 2009 and was listing items and a couple of them sold. They had their PayPal address on the listings so they would get the money. Now their PayPal account has been restricted and since they used my account to sell, my PayPal account is linked to theirs. So mine also got restricted.

I called Paypal and explained everything to them and I demanded that my account be reinstated. I told them that the account takeover on eBay was legitimate and that eBay can and will confirm that. I reported it as soon as it happened and e-bay took care of it. It was clearly a case of identity theft. Which Paypal, since they are the same company, should be able to look up themselves on e-bay. Its all noted in my eBay account and they have access into e-bay's tools. They said they'd re-send it to the fraud department. This was yesterday. Today I got an e-mail saying the appeal was denied. And I've decided that's the end of it. I'm done dealing with them. So screw them.

Good Grief!!!!!!! I can't believe they denied it! I am really speechless and I don't blame you for being done with the whole thing. Really makes me wonder about their business ethics....but wait.....Fee-bay owns them, that explains it all.

Tif when I saw that Etsy announcement I thought of you first! I'm glad you will have another option. I don't blame you for you giving up on them. They are not worth it!

I never thought that could be the reason because I filed a report with e-bay immediately. They took care of everything and it NEVER went through my Paypal. I'm totally square with e-bay so why would Paypal even think anything of it? It was clearly an e-bay account take over and I dealt with it right away and e-bay took care of everything after that. Weird.

I'm grateful for everyone's help in finding/seeing that there are PLENTY of alternatives to Paypal. I just had a buyer approach me on ETSY yesterday in fact. I told her I couldn't/wouldn't accept Paypal and hoped that wouldn't be a problem. She said, "Oh that's fine. I don't have a Paypal account anymore anyway." Ha! Spread the word--Paypal is not the only answer and they suck! They won't get another penny from me!

Just curious, how did you finally find out why they'd done this? PayPal eventually told you?

How frustrating! But I'm glad to hear you got a solution.
I would think that since the both are one company now, they could just take a look at the account and figure it all out by themselves. Go fig.

Actually Paypal NEVER told me anything. I know someone who works for e-bay and they looked into it for me. They are the ones that told me to call Paypal back and demand they re-instate my account and that it's clearly an error. Which I did and which Paypal denied. :(

I'm just now coming across this.  Wow!  I also bookmarked the alternatives, but I use paypal for all of my sales.  Crazy!

Oddly enough, I heard about this from a customer recently. She said paypal has a spending limit that she exceeded and could she write me a check. She claims they shut her down because she spent too much!

I'm glad I read this thread.
Have you considered getting a lawyer?
It seems very strange that they could do this and not allow you to fix the situation.

Thanks for the warning and good luck!

That seems weird that Paypal would shut someone down for spending too much. You would think they would be happy with money running through their system.

Spending too much can be an indicator of fraud.
