Not so much, no.

Although now, I'm strangely hungry for a cheeseburger.

Hi, I'm just clarifying this because I didn't see it in the prospectus, but for the pen & marker show, we can use any medium as long as we also include pen or marker?

Also, what kind of "pen" do you mean?

Ball point, sharpie, calligraphy...totally up to you. We wanted this show to be fairly inclusive.

As for what can be included, media-wise, the work should be predominantly, and preferrably totally in pen or marker.

Thanks for clarifying, I had seen a few in the show that are done in colored pencil and marker, so I was wondering.

The balance of marker/pen to other media is fine in the mixed pieces currently in the show. The only really questionable one is Alma's which is a bit more pencil than ink. I'm personally inclined to let it stay since the ink that is there adds a completely distinct texture and is doing more in the piece than just outlining or text.

Amie, have the rules about entering a piece in more than one exhibit changed?

No, although it happens on occasion if a member has the piece uploaded to their portfolio more than once. Usually, it's in error, rather than trying to skirt the rules. If there's an issue, feel free to drop me a PM so that one of us here can look into it.

Either the prospectus' needs to be more specific or more knowledgable people ought to be checking. At this point, the rules are being applied arbitrarily and often in ignorance.
For instance, my chipmunk painting was removed from the Squirrel exhibit, despite chipmunks being part of the squirrel family as listed in every field guide and scientific literature. They are not tree squirrels, but they are in the squirrel genus, as are groundhogs and prairie dogs. The way the prospectus is worded, ANY member of the squirrel family should've been allowed.
Yet, one of the winning entries in the "Australia Oddities" show was of a Komodo Dragon, a lizard native to Indonesia, which is NOT part of Australia. In fact, Komodo dragons don't live anywhere in Australia at all. So why was it allowed to stay in the show?
If animal shows are going to be in the line-up, then there ought to be someone with more than a Sesame Street knowledge of animals to decide what is permissible. The plant shows don't have this problem because whoever is checking them has more expertise.
It's possible that whoever wrote the prospectus for the Squirrel show didn't know there were so many kinds of squirrels which are divided into tree squirrels and ground squirrels. But that doesn't excuse dismissing a correction of that misconception. Nor does it cover up the sloppy hit or miss application of the rules to other shows.

Regarding the Komodo Dragon: it was only allowed because the artist justified it well in the prospectus as having once been indigenous to Australia via paleontological evidence.

I'm sorry you disagree with our decision to limit the Squirrel exhibit to the bushy-tailed tree varieties that are iconic of their species, and not to cousins within the larger Sciuridae family. I'm also sorry that you feel you were somehow singled out. ALL chipmunks were removed from the exhibit, not just yours. It had nothing to do with the quality of your work or anything at all to do with you personally.

We're trying to find a balance between relaxed enough that people can enter shows without fear and strict enough so that the show is still cohesive. I thought this show's prospectus was pretty straight forward. Red, grey, black, flying...Apparently not. We'll try to be more specific with any prospectus that might cause species confusion in the future.

Amie, I think Jackie has a point. I went to look at the prospectus for the squirrel show, and I've never seen such a short one! Ground squirrels are squirrels, and if you meant to exclude them, you should have said so. When you contrast this with the Australia show which was hugely inclusive, to the point of including fossils, it seems odd.
I have noticed in the past a tendency for the show prospecti to be rather Eastern-US-temperate-climate-centric, for flowers as well as animals. The farther away from your home area, the more inclusive, and vice-versa. I can't find the list of old shows (is that gone?) to look for specifics, but I remember there was a cactus show that included all manner of things that weren't cacti, plus the fact that there are so many kinds that I would have liked to have seen an opuntia show, a mammarillia show, a tall cactus show, etc.
Just my 2¢.

I agree, there needs to be some consistency in how strictly the prospectus is enforced, particularly when it's vague like this. After seeing what was allowed in the "Black & White Animals" show (pieces that were clearly not in compliance with the prospectus in several ways) it's no wonder there's confusion, especially when pieces that DO fit the prospectus are pulled.

Regarding the squirrel show, it's not fair to say "oh we only meant certain types of squirrels, you should have known what we were thinking." Honestly, it looks like whoever was responsible for the entries (is it still Melissa?) didn't realize that chipmunks were part of the squirrel family and made a mistake. It's not a big deal - people make mistakes all the time and not everyone knows everything about the relationship between squirrels and chipmunks. I say add the pulled pieces back in, apologize for any confusion and then decide if future shows are going to be policed or not. If yes, then please be very specific about the criteria and be consistent about pulling entries that don't fit, particularly when they're brought to your attention.

The irony here? If I had left the chipmunks in, we'd be getting similar flack for not enforcing the prospectus. We made a decision to just accept what is commonly known as squirrel. Bushy tail, eats nuts, lives in a tree, and typically steals strawberries from my garden daily. Everything that didn't meet that criteria was pulled. I didn't think we needed to define squirrel, which isn't just found here, but all over Europe. I believe some were imported to Australia as well when the Brits colonized. We specified red, grey, black, & flying. I'm sorry that wasn't specific enough.

We stand by our decision to not include chipmunks. They're lovely. They're closely related. But they're not what we meant when we asked for squirrels. Just as the Apple is in the Rosaceae family, commonly known as a the Rose family, we can all agree that "apple" does not equal "rose." Just because chipmunks and squirrels are both in the Sciuridae family does not mean they're both "squirrels." A squirrel is a squirrel, a chipmunk is a chipmunk.

Once again, there are zoological inaccuracies in one of the shows, this time the African Wildlife show. Jaguars are not native to Africa and despite 2 PMs to admin, it remains in the show. The last message to me insisted that jaguars live "in Africa and Asia", though no source was cited.
Here is a link from the Nature Conservancy that proves otherwise-
    http://www.nature.org/newsfeatures/specialfeatures/animals/mammals/jaguar.xml

     another from National Geographic-
http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/mammals/jaguar/

   and Animal Planet-
http://animal.discovery.com/guides/mammals/habitat/tropforest/jaguar.html

Are you saying that all of these organizations know less than whomever is making the decisions at EBSQ? As I pointed out in my PM, it's easy to check the facts in this modern era of Google, but this was obviously not done. It's yet another instance where inconsistancy and personal animosity carry more influence than the actual rules of an exhibit. Why have themes at all when anyone can enter anything in a show? Topics appear to be irrelevant!

Jackie, do I seriously have to provide sources for you? Seriously?

I'd give you more, but I am busy with other site-related issues right now.

Specifically:

quote:

The idea of jaguars in Europe might be surprising given that we generally think of this cat as a South American species, and one that also occurs in Central America and in some southern parts of the USA. But this present distribution is a historical artefact: jaguars were originally Old World cats, originating in Eurasia or Africa, and later moving across eastern Asia and, at the end of the Pliocene, crossing Beringia into the Americas (Kurtn & Anderson 1980, Hemmer et al. 2001).

Which was good enough for me for the bloody jaguar to stay in the show.

Fossils again? Does that mean we can put dinosaurs into shows too?

Jackie,

The wording in the prospectus stated that ALL indigenous species were welcome, and per the document I cited, jaguars were in Africa long before they made their way to South America. Since I have to honor the prospectus as written, the jaguar is eligible.

Why do you always do this in public when my private responses to these same questions aren't enough for you? If you aren't happy with how we administer our shows, don't enter. I know it's professional suicide to ever let a customer know you're irked, but seriously, Jackie, this has been going on for YEARS. And I'm irked. When we screw up, we own it, but I am comfortable leaving the bloody jaguar in the show. What does it matter? This isn't the Met. We aren't being graded on zoology. It's an ART show. It's supposed to be FUN. And frankly, every time you do this, I get closer and closer to pulling the rest of the animal-centric shows from the schedule and never featuring animals again. Which would be a damn shame because EBSQ has dozens of awesome animal artists. Including you. So please--cut me a sliver of slack and stop whinging on the forums when you aren't happy with my private answers, m'kay?

Amie, is there any way to easily find old exhibits, without having to scroll through 35 pages of them (I'm thinking of how it was in the old system where we could see all of the old shows listed and then just click on whatever one we wanted to see)?
