I wanted to start the shredded paper collage...I love how it looks when finished but it's so time consuming.......I originally did this because I wanted to add it to my portfolio to send to the publisher art department for illustrating for children....what do you guys think? have you seen children board books with illustrations like this?

I think it is very different than what you usually see in kids books. I would have loved that when I was a kid. I was very into the different ways books were illustrated when I was a kid.

Now, that is interesting and does it ever look time consuming!  I think it is unique and unusual for kids books.  I haven't seen anything like that in my grandkiddies books!

I haven't seen anything like it (and I'm always looking at illustrations in childrens books, it's the first section I go to at the bookstore!). When you said collage I was thinking Eric Carle, but yours is nothing like his.

Nice work, too bad it's so time consuming. Good luck with it!

Hey, I don't know how I didn't see this thread. I clicked on the links up above, and I didn't see shredded paper collages... so I'm a little confused. Am I looking at the right links? Are these the illustrations that you intended to show?

But, I might be able to offer a perspective here as well. I am, by trade, a preschool teacher. I work as a Early Childhood literacy instructor for the US Govt right now, and I teach a college level Children's Literature course. So working with children's literature is my career.

It's such a competitive field now that its hard to find resources online about illustrating. All you find are books for sale. I found the following article online. It is pretty good, I think. Here goes...

http://kumfgallery.com/index.php?id=82

You know what might work well for you, if you have some time? You could choose a line from a children's book, and illustrate it and then post it in the Critiques section here. :) Then you can get feedback on your art process as well as how closely it connects to the actual literature content. Just an idea.
