I really would like to learn how paints jewels such as rubies, sapphires, emerald, diamonds etc.

Could someone guide/mentor me or point me in the right direction?

Many thanks.

well, painting gems is pretty much like painting anything else...you look at them for local color, values, shape and form....if the gem is faceted, that makes it easy in that you just paint the different facets in whatever color/value they are, which is determined by the light source. I would get a gem catalog....you can find them online or order one....and practice painting those....they are usually photogaphed very well and it should be easy to break them down into the shapes and values you need to make it come across...

one thing that seems important is to put one or more well placed reflections where they will sparkle...and that usually means against a dark value....the darker the value, the brighter the sparkle will seem...

Lauren thank you so much! I will try to apply what you have stated here.  I'll keep you posted on the progress.

Lauren's advice is spot on!!

One thing else that you might do to assist your learning to look at gems in terms of painting them is to take a photo of a gem - blow it up to a larger size and take another piece of paper with a hole in it (a hole that would only reveal a portion of the gem) and place that over the photo of the gem. Study a section of the gem and then move the hole to another area of the gem - when you stop seeing it as a gem and start seeing it as colors and shapes then you're on your way!!!

It's much the same way for painting metal and even glass - you have to teach yourself to look at it differently - forget what it is and see how it really looks.

Thanks Lauren - it is a very useful tool/technique - since you can't see the whole you pay attention to the parts. ;)
