Two German art historians claim that VanGogh didn't cut of his own ear, but his friend and fencing master Gauguin did! That sort of changes how one looks at old Vincent, if true.

actually, it makes sense....Gauguin didn't have much patience with Vincent, or anyone else who disagreed with him, and was pretty self absorbed from what I've read....I'm not surprised to hear this theory...

how could he have cut off just his ear so cleanly with a sword? I think he cut it off himself. He was self destructive and it makes more sense in my opinion

I had read that he actually had lead poisoning......a result of his having boiled his colors in the same pots and pans in which he used to cook his food. The food poisoning caused many of the mental disturbances he was known to have suffered.

i have heard that story too.and fencing swords of old can split someones thoat open.i've also read about lead  making his mind go.but who knows,stories get better each time they are told.
