wkevinmurray -> Simon Sez... Our Hero's (4/14/2009 10:31:54 PM)

This round of "Simon Sez" came to me because of yesterday's passing of Harry Kalas.  If you live anywhere near Philadelphia or are a fan of Major League Baseball you are in moaring today. Harry "The Voice" of the Phillies for almost 40 years passed away yesterday at the ballpark in Washington, DC. He also lent his voice to NFL Films and Campbell's Soup.  I'm almost 50 and can't remember a game where I didn't hear his voice broadcasting the play by play.

I certainly don't want this to be some kind of a bummer thread. I want it to be upbeat and positive.  Who's your Hero, Mentor, Inspiration. Have you used someones influence to guide your own work?  Well lets see them or the work they have inspired !! Lets say up to five entries. I think I'll close the show next Saturday the 25th.

This is my father, the man who gave me my work ethic. The kids I grew up with in my neighborhood gave him the nickname.

Interesting subject, Kevin.

Where is everyone?  We should probably extend this topic for another week--its a good one.

O.K. I guess I'll start with my biggest hero, my daughter.  Ella just turned 11 the other day.  When I found out I was pregnant with her my life changed drastically, as it does when such things arise.  Until then, I had little direction in my life and I suffered from terrible depression and anxiety.  I had little self-respect and self-confidence.  I don't know where I'd be without her in my life, but she has brought a clarity and stability to my life I don't think would have happened without her.  I hate to even say this in an open forum, but I seriously doubted my capabilities as a parent in the early days of pregnancy, and even contemplated various alternatives for not going through with being a parent.  I didn't think I could pull it off and completely misjudged my ability.

Now I know it is the biggest and best thing I have ever done and I'm damn good at it.  I wouldn't have it any other way.  This is my little hero back in 2002, at age 4, when we took a trip up to Leland, Michigan in the early autumn.

And here is a musical hero and friend, Graeme Downes, of the New Zealand band The Verlaines, with his pet goat, who was affectionately known as Goat, and who used to keep the lawn nice and trim.  This was taken during my first trip to New Zealand around September 1994.  Graeme is wearing the t-shirt designed for the Red Hot Organization's first AIDS benefit album, No Alternative, featuring Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, Patti Smith, Uncle Tupelo, The Breeders, The Verlaines, and many others.  Graeme is also holding an All Blacks cup--he is a diehard rugby fan, as most Kiwi men are.

I will never stop missing her.  My Aunt.  Sister Laura Daigle OSB.

Well, here is my first attempt-I think this is a fun challenge!

My son has been through hell with my cancer diagnosis.  He has stuck by me through the worst and best of times with mostly a smile on his face.  It is a difficult fate to accept when your mom has breast cancer and will probably die from it.  He never allows it to get him too down-always there when I need him to take me places, to Dr's appointments, etc.-even to go shopping for art supplies!  He is my hero!

What an inspiration you are, and what a beautiful photograph.  It looks like you might be his hero too.

Wow I have to agree Shawn...wonderful

I'm jumping on the bandwagon.....Eric, my son is my hero. He is following his dreams....he loves music, that's his major....I would have been to scared..he is confident and works very hard to obtain his goals no matter how outragous they seem . At 20 years old he is more focused than I ever was. Kind, compassionate and just an all around great kid. I'm so lucky!

Shawn, thank you for sharing your story with us. It makes the lovely image of your daughter so much more compelling.

As for the guy and his pet goat... " ROCK-ON !! "

Steph, You can just tell by her eyes what a wonderful person you Aunt was.

Beth, I'm in awe over such a powerful image. It dramatically shows the amount of love you two share.

Lisa, I sincerely believe that his mother had a large part in him reaching Hero status.

lamillerphotography -> RE: Simon Sez... Our Hero's (4/18/2009 2:32:04 PM)

Thanks Shawn[:)] I might also mention that he LOVES to wear that tux[sm=rolleyes.gif] I seriously think if he could get away with it he would wear it everyday. Snappy dresser that he is

shawnmariehardy -> RE: Simon Sez... Our Hero's (4/18/2009 8:52:57 PM)

My ex used to wear these white shirts--reminded me of a pirate shirt--the puffy sleeves, long & billowy. I loved it when he dressed up.

shawnmariehardy -> RE: Simon Sez... Our Hero's (4/24/2009 4:54:21 PM)

YOO HOO!!! What happened???

wkevinmurray -> RE: Simon Sez... Our Hero's (4/26/2009 11:29:04 PM)

There may have only been five entries into this round of "Simon Sez" and each and everyone of those images carries a powerful emotional bond that I'm glad you could share with us. I was touched by each one, but none as strong as for the image of Beth and her son.  A truer image of love and strength would be hard to find.

So I declare Beth as our next "Simon" !!  Congratulations Beth and what's are next subject ??
