Ok, well I'm not really sure this is art, but it is fibre! Molicious has been sick this week so I haven't been able to put my mind to painting. I've been wanting to make one of these purses from a felted wool sweater (felting just seems really fun to me for some reason, but I do like the tactile arts like sculpting and pottery). In any event, since my mind was a wreck I went to the thrift store today and bought this Eddie Bauer 100% wool sweater for $4.

Then I felted it in the washing machine using hot water, dish soap, and the heavy duty cycle. After which I dried it in the dryer (which took forever).

Then, not finding a pattern on the internet I liked, I just set about making a purse out of the sweater. And here is how it turned out.

It's really not lopsided like it looks, it just has my junk in it so it would stand up. Turned out pretty good! It will be a fun purse to carry about... Think I'll try another some time.

Oh and I forgot to mention that it really really smelled bad when I got it wet! Not sure if that was a function of the thrift store or the wool....

Doesn't smell now though.

darn it I can't see the photos...

ok I can see them now...wow....I love it! I think felting is so much fun....this turned out great...

Oh fabilicious! After it is felted, does it take to cutting sewing just as any other heavy fabric? I want to try one!

Wow it looks great! How long did it take (excluding dryer time)? When you put it together as a purse, did you just cut & sew it together?

It sewed much more easily than I thought it would, given that it is so thick. And actually it cuts fairly easily after you can get it started. But it is thick when you are sewing two layers together.

I think it took about 2.5 hours. But a good hour of that was hand stitching the handle and then around the top edge and the point. I think it would save a lot of time to just sew the handle and turn it, like a tube you know. Also a good portion of that was just figuring out the pattern. How I wanted it to look, and how to cut it etc.

I think if I did another one it might take an hour or so (not counting felting/drying time).

Before I started I did read on the internet to felt the sweater first (I thought perhaps you sewed it first, then felted). I am glad I did this as not all of the yarns felted up the same. You can see the bottom wasn't as tight as the rest. I just cut the bottom off and sewed my bottom seam there.

I can diagram it if anyone is interested. It really wasn't hard at all. Beginner level sewing.

This is wonderful! I love felting. I've always done it with stuff I've knitted, but I want to try this way too. I have a couple wool sweaters in my closet that should be nervous.
