I posted this on the EBSQ Etsy Forum too.

I showed a friend of mine this spot illustration I painted in Gouache and Colored Pencil of a Cocker Spaniel that I'm painting in a larger size for a client.  It's a loose study illustration I painted to make sure I'm using a the right set of colors and it was just on a scratch piece of 5"x7" watercolor paper.  Anyway, she loved it and wants me to paint one for her of her own dog which I priced at $25.00.  Is that too low?  People are interested in my loose watercolor "sketches" which are not detailed like my regular work and takes me little time to do.  I actually would prefer to do more of this.

I'm still new at this and would like some feedback.  I've heard of selling ACEO's but I've never painted anything that small before.  A 5"x7" size I can do.

Here's the illustration my friend saw.  this Cocker Spaniel has a turkey neck in case you're wondering.

Pricing is subjective and personal, however I think that $25 is a good price.

i have a formula that i use charging per square inch and then adjusting per material used.

why noot create your own based on the price you normally charge to derive the new price...  good luck!

.50 x ____ inches x ____inches = ______
-25% for acrylic
+25% for small works (under 18”)
-25% for canvas board

Thanks so much to you both for answering.  I'm hungry for business right now, especially since I lost my cushy corporate job.  I hope this pricing will keep me busy.

Lisa, I like your formula.. I wasn't too far off......thanks!

Hello Wanda,

I love Lisa's pricing scale, I'm still working the "bugs" out of my scale (ie, how much per square inch do I raise the price for adding xx medium / materials).

One thing I would like to remind you, it may be obviouse, but don't want you loosing money, is to remember to add in the cost of any special sleeve/frame/matting you may choose to include with the artwork.

Also, if you can go smaller just by 1 inch, you can call your pieces OSWOA (tm). OSWOA are "Original Small Works Of Art" and measure 4x6 (or 6x4). There are some rules on OSWOA as the name is trademarked, the main one being that a piece be original (for digital, it has to be the FIRST copy printed, no editions!), its signed AND it be priced HIGHER than $9.95. To see complete rules go to:

http://www.oswoa.com/oswoa1.htm

THe OSWOA name isn't as known as the ATC or ACEO names, I think because the trademark scares people away, but they haven given EVERY ARTIST the permission to use it if you follow their guidlines.

With ATC / ACEO you can get HARD plastic sleeves to store them in, anyone know where to get the same HARD sleeves sized for OSWOA and other sizes??

Just found a site: http://www.bcwsupplies.com/cat-Toploaders+for+Photos.htm

The have 4x6, 6x4, 5x7, 6x9 8x10, 8.5x11, 12x36, 14x17, 16x20 and up and up and up to 43x32 inches. These are the hard plastic sleeves, not the thin, floppy ones!
