NEW YEAR NEW MEDIA CHALLENGE

My New Year’s resolution for 2009 will be to participate in more challenges, more shows, and more art related events! That means I may have to break away from familiar territory and do something NEW! So I decided to host this challenge, and pass my resolution on to you!

The Challenge: Create something using a whole new media, a form of art you do not normally do. Break your comfort zone and try it!!

Always wanted to try something, but didn’t have the excuse? Well now you do! Have a box of art supplies collecting dust that someone bought you as a gift when they heard you were an artist, but didn’t ask what you did? Well, now you can “do it”!

The Rules:

1.  Create a piece of artwork using media that is “new” to you. You should attempt to use a media that is new or alien to you. If you are one of those artists who have experimented in practically everything, then the artwork you do should be in a media you do not work with on a regular basis, something you haven’t used in at least 3 years, and preferably a media that you have never actively sold as an artist.

2. As this is a “new” media, the piece should be no more than 3 months old at the time of submission.

3. Entries can contain aspects of your training/standard form, but should be easily distinguished as different to even the most naïve non art people. Switching from painting with brushes to painting with your fingers is not acceptable, switching from painting 2 dimensional canvass to fully functional furniture might be (did you alter the furniture, have to employ new skills/craftsmanship, have to learn how to seal it so its fully functional, or did you just dump a tube of paint onto a new table and named it “abstract”.).

4. Think outside the box (unless you’re doing a shadow box type thing, then you can stay inside the box, or expand outside the box, up to you).

5. Keep it CHEAP!!! Don’t run out and buy $1000.00 in new art supplies/professional skill tools! There are many many media's out there that cost little or nothing to play with! Even if you have the $1000.00 to throw around, be fair to the competitors that don’t. This contest is about your creativity and ingenuity, not your pocket book!!

6. A post will be made on January 1st to start submitting, and submissions can be added throughout the month of January. Entries will be closed when I wake up on the morning of February 1st! You got a whole month to post, and you have more than a month extra time to come up with something! I know you are all creative, so get creative-ating!!

7. The most important rule; HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!

Winner may or may not get a prize, I haven’t decided on what might be appropriate for this show yet ;)

Yeah, it's exactly like that. Only completely different.
I've enjoyed just about as much of this as I can stand.

so if you normally paint in acrylics with brushes.. could you for the challenge try a knife painting but still with acrylics??    I have a bunch of gels and stuff for my paints I have never used and I have never done a knife painting.. but think it would be fun.. would that count?   Or does it really need to be even more different than that?

I was thinking more specifically a new media, not just a new technique, and I think knife painting would be more a technique change. I'm hoping to get people to try something completly out of their norm (like I did with the doll challenge, way different for me, but I LOVED it!).

I will post "official" rules at a latter time, just wanted to give you all something to think about..........

But, Joe, I think the point they are trying to make is some people have tried just about everything either on their own, in undergrad or grad school.  So how about you broaden it a tiny bit and say something like - any media that you have prodeuced three pieces or less in, or no more than one semester's assignments, or haven't used in more than 5 years (or something like that).
