Athene Noctua

Statement:

Media:  Linocut, water soluable ink, acid free paper
Dimensions:
  4"x6"
Date of Work:
  October 2008

I made this linocut for the EBSQ Forum Printmaking Challenge. Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom is often associated with an owl, however the owl is more than her symbol or mascot. Athena could appear in the form of an owl. In my linocut you see Athena in her Owl aspect.

This is a 2 color reduction linocut, which was challenging enough for me! The first cut was the owl on a branch printed with blue. The lino was then reduced to print the moon, the branch with leaves, and the owl's eyes with gold as befits a goddess. In the actual print, the gold is a lovely rich metalic color, which unfortunately looks more greenish in the photo.

To add more dimensionality to my 2 color linocut, I chose to print it on a pale green paper with a subtle insect pattern.
(Limited edition of 10 prints.)

Sugar Skull, Day of the dead
I spent a part of my childhood growing up in Mexico. The Day of the dead Celebrations were an amazing thing to experience.Sugar Skulls and chocolate coffins! What more could a weird little kid like me ask for!

Although I have mixed feelings about appropriating the customs of other cultures, I have such a fondness for these images I needed to work one out.
quote:

The Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos in Spanish) is a holiday celebrated mainly in Mexico and by people of Mexican heritage (and others) living in the United States and Canada. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and relatives who have died. The celebration occurs on the 1st and 2nd of November, in connection with the Catholic holy days of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day which take place on those days. Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts.
Scholars trace the origins of the modern holiday to indigenous observances dating back thousands of years, and to an Aztec festival dedicated to a goddess called Mictecacihuatl (known in English as "The Lady of the Dead").

Thank you

Here is mine. It is my first attempt at linocut. I used two different blocks for the two colors.

My design is based on a Native American legend that the raven tricked the sky cheif who was hoarding the light of the sun and stars, stole them from him and threw them into the sky bringing light to the entire earth.

Selu the Corn Mother

Media: Linocut, water soluble ink, cold press, acid free watercolor paper
Dimensions: 8"x10"
Date of Work: December 2008

I decided to touch my heritage a bit with this Challenge. Selu is often called the Cherokee Corn Mother. The myth is she taught the Cherokee how to grow and care for Corn - a staple in their diet. Here's a bit from the story:

Selu lived with her husband, Kanati, and two sons. Everyday, she would go away from the house and return with a basket full of corn. The boys wondered where the corn came from, so they followed her one day. They saw her go into a storehouse, and they peeked in and watched her. There they saw her place her basket and shake herself. The corn started falling from her body into the basket.

*whew* just made it in time! Thanks for having this neat mythology print-making challenge :)

"Mercury's Wings" based on the Greek/Roman mythological god of speedy message and package delivery.

I wanted to jazz up my customer's packages so I carved two versions of the ever-popular Mercury's wings which signify speedy package delivery. Mercury comes from the greek "merx" which means merchandise. Mercury is usually depicted with 2 wings on his helmet and heels. Wings signifying speedy package and message delivery are a popular image and have been used on everything from Victorian Valentines to political cartoons, advertising logos and print ads, illustrations, comics, movies, cartoons, etc. etc.

The version I printed on the envelope was carved on a soft rubber printing pad. I also carved one version on a lino block, but the soft rubber pad turned out to be much easier to use - I could press it down on the package or envelope with my fingers or a sppon, whereas the rigid lino block took a much harder, more even continuous press, so I didn't use that one.

Iridescent blue printing ink with touches of design marker added, printed on cream #10 envelope. This is about a year old.

The Tree of Enlightenment

The Tree of Enlightenment

Media paper, black ink
Technique: Pulled from inked chased copper plate
Dimensions: 3 1/2 “ x 3 1/2”
Date: December, 2008

An archetype theme occurring in mythology is the tree. The Garden of Eden had the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Buddha obtained enlightenment while sitting under a tree. The Cross is referred to as a tree. The Druids revered trees as do many cultures. Trees figure prominently in more modern mythologies, also. For example: George Washington was said to have chopped down a cherry tree. Jonny Appleseed is given credit for planting apple trees all over the country. Even Newton was said to have grasped the concept of gravity while sitting under an apple tree.
I myself have found trees to be the one most fascinating subject in my own art. So, instead of focusing on one particular myth, I pay homage to the many paths to enlightenment and the trees that mark the way.

Yeah, it's exactly like that. Only completely different.
I've enjoyed just about as much of this as I can stand.

In Basque folklore, leltxu or Iritxu were nocturnal spirits that appear either as a human or as a bird. Regardless of it's form, it is always recognizable as the Ieltxu breathe fire.

Just because I don't put things in my portfolio doesn't mean that I don't do anything. Close, maybe...
