Greetings!  I adore these forum chalenges and this one sounds particularly fun -- very much looking forward to participating (and indeed, Beth's Owl entry is delightful and very inspiring!).  Question about the linoleum block prints -- are we literally talking 'linoleum' here...?

I do have some of those carvey tools somewhere around here -- thing is, some time ago I put a self-imposed personal moratorium on purchasing new art supplies (beyond the VERY basic -- like paint/brushes, although I have enough stockpiled I wont be running out anytime soon).  I've accumulated so much raw material over these long years -- all sorts of supplies and craft related items, things that caught my eye in the store, or was on sale, or that I had a notion to experiment with, or that I thought I needed, etc (ADD anyone?).  Finally some time ago I came to the realization that A.) I have more than enough material to work with Right Here, and B.) that I don't need to be contributing to the issue of more STUFF in the world (including the manufacture and packaging of said stuff), AND (most importantly) C.)  Please. if I can't manage to be inspired and expressive of my creativity with what I already have on hand..., well, I may as well hang up my artist's hat (beret?)....

So as such, in accordance to my self-promise, this leaves me to approaching this project without the purchase of new materials.  Any ideas where I might get my hands on some used linoleum, if in fact this is what we are talking about?   Suggestions or ideas would be most welcome... Thanks!

I don't know about finding used linoleum but what I have heard is you can use anything to carve a pattern into to print, someone said pink erasers even. So if you have to go cheap maybe even using a couple of old potatoes out of the bottom of your fridge  I got a kit with a couple of those linoleum blocks a while back so i am going to use those.

Check the art supply store for linoleum. it should be with the cutters and ink. I am not a big fan of Speedball's Speedy Cut but it works well enough if you want something softer. You can use erasers. Rubber (the pink ones), plastic, polymer, latex - anything you can carve and will hold a line, really. You can try wood. Exacto makes a set of heavier duty tools that work well on soft wood. I got mine in the wood section of AC Moore.

I didn't find actual linoleum at the places I shop at.  They all have a less brittle and more pliable product.

But, the challenge is open to all types of printmaking, so you probably can dig up something to use around the house.  Collography is a good method for this.  I think there's Live Studio tutorial on collography by Paul Helm...let me look.  Here's the link:

Well now I am very intrigued.  I am also trying not to buy anything new for now for various reasons.  Can I seriously use a potato or scrap wood or even a foam tray?  If I don't have to use the "traditional" methods, then I am in!  (not that I didn't want to be "in" before but....)

I love the way that Paul offers ideas for overcoming the lack of any expensive equipment or supplies. Don't have an etching press?  No worries, use a spoon, brayer, or roll over it with your car!    I used a rolling pin.

The key is even pressure. Put it on a chair, put a board on it and sit down.

As long as it's your image, carved or whatever by you (ie, no using that Happy Birthday stamp in the drawer, there) the challenge is open to even the most wildly non-traditional. A friend of mine does a lot of interesting work using the foam from egg cartons.

Sorry I have been absent lately--my internet only wants to function for 5 minutes at a time lately. I think I've got it on the mend, though.

Excellent!  I'll get crackin' (-- in the meantime, how's this for nontraditional? (and just sharing here, not entering) :):

I rememeber slicing my thumb up in high school and haven't really tried since, but thinking maybe I will.
Can you use acrylic paint instead of ink?

I've had trouble with acrylic paint drying before I can get a good print, but if you sufficiently water it down or add a retardant (I use one a lot but I can't remember what it's called) that seems to help. Another problem I've had is some difficulty cleaning it off afterward--I haven't tried it with composite materials, but it was a pain on regular linoleum. I think it's totally doable, I just haven't experimented much.

Patience, I like it! What did you use to make it?

The links I provided explain it more fully -- essentially it was a newborn placenta, painted with acrylics, with watercolor paper placed upon it to make the prints....

Wow, Patience that is amazing.  It does indeed look like a tree!!  How wonderful for you, the Mom, and the child.  Very special.  I will now stop wondering if the ideas are have floating around are too unconventional....

One more question  - is it okay to combine more than one impression (meaning from different objects/applications) to one sheet....or does that begin to make something else?  I am afraid I am not making sense here....let me give you an example.  Let's just say I went with Patience's idea and used a placents for a tree...then I did a park bench out of lino or potato or something, and combined them into one image.  Is that ok?

I don't think you're supposed to use your thumb, LOL!

I think more than one impression is ok; I sometimes use a "wallpaper" like carving to create a background for a more prominent print image. So, sounds fine to me!

I had a chance before I left the UK to get a taster course in Printmaking at Poole Printmakers. I wouldn't call it a course exactly though - basically a fellow member of an artists group was also a member there and we had one of our meetings held at Poole Printmakers.

It was a great day!!

I'm just waiting now on some supplies to arrive and I'm going to get to work on my entry. I've got the design all ready.

YAY Noelle!!  Your Day of the Dead print is kewl!  I like the first one you showed us too.  It looks like you have a knack for linocuts...did you enjoy doing them?

BTW... Thanks for posting your challenge entry, it was too lonely there!

Actually I do like doing them, Thinking of buying some more of the easy cut. There something zen about figuring out the negative space for me, and I like carving them too. I need a better "press" the spoon is not the best thing LOL
