OK...I'm doing a painting (acrylic on stretched canvas) and I'm adding a couple of paper elements to it....how do I adhere them to the canvas and is spray varnish ok to go over it when it's done then?

Olga, several adhesives are fine and archival.  Do you have something like modge podge? It is fine (and preferrable IMHO) to spray afterwards.  Link me if you need more specifics.

Olga I'm not sure if you will like the modge podge to go over the paper (under it yes - but watch out for rippling). you paint smooth like I do - the modge podge gets all textual/raised if you are not careful when goin over the paper.

I use E6000 (dries acid free) then spray over the paper with your sealant - if it's heavy weight paper it wont get get that speckled/sprayed/waterlogged look around the edges. magazines type paper does not spray varnish well LOL

Thanks Donna & Kris! I have both modge podge and E6000...I was concerned about the modge podge because it does get puckery sometimes so I think I'll try the E6000! Thanks again you 2!

I wouldn't have thought of using my E6000 for paper, but I do love it for heavier stuff.  Depending on what you are doing, of course the acrylic itself will hold little bits, too.  I will have to try the E6000 on paper...hhhmmm.

Yeah I was disappointed in the modge podge I had bought the one that wasn't supposed to ripple (forget the version but in a blue bottle me thinks) and it did it just as bad as regular. Using the E6000 on paper is a little more cumbersome but it's worth it complaratively(sp lol) . (the only problem I've ever had with E6000 was minor rippling of some plastic i glued down.)

Donna you are right about acrylic paint that works well too :D forgot about that. I don't think that ripples as much as modge podge. Specially if it's thick tubed acrylic that has less water content.

Hi Olga and everyone!

For this type of project, I like to use Gloss Gel Medium (Liquitex works great). The technique is similar to a gel transfer. Just apply a thin layer of the gel to the paper element as well as the canvas and stick it on. When it dries, with a clean soft brush apply a very thin layer over the paper elements and the entire canvas when the work is finished - this will give it durability & longer life to your artwork. After that dries, you can apply the final varnish. Just make sure the gel medium is a clear type.

Gloss Gel Medium (Liquitex works great).

This is what I was going to suggest.  It is actually made FOR use with acrylics and paper collage.  A jar of it is $10 at Michaels.  It also comes in a matte dried finish.

Liquitex Acrylic Gloss Gel Medium - Size: 8 oz.
LIQ5708
Regularly $11.95  $8.37 At Rex! Save 30%
Excellent for retaining brush marks while slowing the drying time and adding body to the paint. Mix with transparent colors for impasto glazes of great depth and brilliance. Excellent for transferring printed images.
Attributes
  • Dries to a gloss finish.
  • Viscosity and body similar to Heavy Body Artist Color.
  • Translucent when wet, transparent (clear) to translucent when dry. Thicker applications result in less transparent dry medium films.
  • Ideal medium to mix with Heavy Body Acrylic Color to extend paint, increase the brilliance and transparency of color, without changing the thickness of the paint.
  • Mix with Heavy Body Artist Color to obtain paint similar in color depth to oil paint.

Application

As An Extender:
  • Mix with Heavy Body Artist Color to extend volume and increase transparency, while maintaining paint viscosity.
  • Mix with Soft Body Artist Color to extend volume and increase transparency, while increasing paint viscosity.

As A Ground:
  • Use as transparent ground for acrylic paint instead of gesso. Allows substrate to be seen. To prevent Substrate Induced Discoloration, wash cotton or linen canvas before use. Refer to Matte Medium: Application - Ground for SID definition.
  • When applying Gloss Gel Medium to raw canvas, use adequate pressure to force the medium into the canvas weave to insure proper bonding between the gel and canvas.

Collage:
  • Makes and excellent glue for collage and decoupage.

Powdered Pigments:
  • Use as the binder for powdered pigments to make an inexpensive "student grade" Heavy Body (thick) gloss paint or achieve unusual paint films. Pigment must be compatible with acrylic emulsion.

Hi Olga and everyone!

Hey Alex! It's good you stopped in.

I know everyone knows this, but Goop and E6000 are the same thing so if you can't find one - use the other.

Hi Alex!  Thanks for your input.  Lisa, you are a virtual encyclopedia!

Moo, I just learned last week or so that Goop and E6000 are the same thing.  Thanks for confirming!

I'm a junky for Polyacrylic. In nice even THICK coats its crystal clear. You can just keep layering and laying if you want the texture to be visible but unfelt. There is a nice brand I get from Home Depot or Lowe's that doesn't yellow paper over time that would be nice. You really have to read other labels when you use paper. Some are not exactly specific to paper material and may cause a yellowing or cracking to the paper over time. Hope that helps some... you got LOTS of nice advice already. Its really whatever you are comfortable using.
