Does anyone seal their works on paper done in prismacolor pencil? I also have a couple of mixed - pastel and prisma, and those will definitely need some sort of sealer.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks!

saran wrap and chewed, sugarless gum.

Sorry - have only done a few works in Prismacolor and I didn't seal them. They seem to be doing ok but then again, they are put away. If they are on paper, just keep them as you would anything on paper until framed. I know nothing about pastels. Here is a link to Jen's question in Painting and to yours, too. lol.

It's been a while since I've done anything in color pencil, but I seem to remember I sprayed them with matte fixative.

Greetings GreenBiscuit!

I've had bad experiences with spray fixative in the past, so I don't even attempt it anymore, LOL! It never seems to fail....I get one little droplet of excess fixative in one spot, and it ruins my work.

Does anyone know how to prevent that from happening? Or how to fix it when it does happen?

Hi Adra! Very nice work; I love your shell photos especially.

Fixative dribble is annoying! make sure the can's nozzle is always clean. A dirty/clogged nozzle will dribble. Wiping it after each use will help. In the dark ages, we used to apply fixative with a mouth blower, but that sounds awfully toxic now... plus I don't think you can find those anymore!

Most colored pencil artists use Workable Fixative but you can also use Lascaux Fixative. Lascaux is more expensive though.

I have done some recent work in colored pencils and used a clear non yellowing fixative

I don't think they need to be fixed, although if you've mixed with pastels that's probably a different situation. A lot of fixatives darken the colors so be sure to experiment first.

Prismacolor has 2 fixatives themselves:

Prismacolor Myston Workable Fixative

Prismacolor Tufflim Final Fixative. The final is available in matte or gloss.

I never used to, now I do after a month or so. that is usually enough time for the wax to come to the surface so I can buff it down, then spray fixative And then a very light, all purpose spray gloss varnish. I went back after several months and found without exception all of my drawings were looking faded, I knew it was the wax rising, and I decided I would rather find that then have the customer. I don't know if I sprayed fixitive on it right away if it would still, do that. It does make the colors slightly darker, but for me that is a good thing.

In the end, I have sealed them with a couple of light spray coats. I have been very happy with the results. Like Alma, the deep colors work for me.

I spray mine with a workable fixatif and I'm very pleased with the results. It deepens the color, prevents the wax bloom and gives a uniform surface. (you don't see the actually strokes of my blending) I've done a little with pastel and I noticed that spraying them has a tendency to kill the color, make it soak into the paper.

OK I have a list of questions now:

What brand fixative do you all use - just the prismacolor or is there something else you prefer?

Have any of you used them with oil based colored pencils (such as polychromos or Lyra) or just wax based? I'm wondering if the result would be any different.

Since it's a workable fixative, I assume that means you can go back in & still work on the drawing - does that change the experience at all?

I'm going to sound like a total idiot, here. I just went and checked what I use to seal my drawings. I don't use workable fix at all. LOL!! I did in the beginning, but it wasn't workable for me and didn't seem to seal the bloom. Now, I don't spray until it's completed and I use Krylon Crystal Clear. My mother also works with CP. Her style is much more realistic than mine. She uses an electric eraser to remove pigment and rework, to beautiful effects. She too, doesn't spray until the work is done. (I'm trying to get her to join us, but the puter still intimidates her and she's shy. She's far better than I am.)

One hint for photographing your work. Don't spray until you've taken your picture. I've had a hell of a time fighting glare.

I know this is way late,but i do a lot of the prismcolor pencil on heavy paper,i do something called burnishing,i think that what its called,you use rounded tool(you can buy tool),i use end of rounded paint brush,and you rub color into fibers of paper,it gives it a almost painted look,then i use the krylon,just make sure it's non-yellowing.
