THANKS SO MUCH, LAUREN!!!! :) :) :)

I didn't use Sculpey III - but maybe their mold clay has some problems too?? With that, I just inserted some of the glass eyes into the clay and removed them before baking.

So the Silicon molding material is fluid enough that you pour it over whatever it is you want to mold? I have some plastic eyes from which I can remove the stems - they're a perfect 4.5mm and would glue down easily enough I think.

I have some black dye - oil based and I don't lack for other things I could try! lol!!! :) :)

Because the eyes are so small - I was measuring the two parts with a syringe (separate syringe for each) - these are really small thing!

I really like the look of the glass eyes - but I can't find cats eyes small enough for Prittens. I did buy some of the smallest available and they are just too big AND the slits are very inconsistent making them hard to find two that really match well.

I figured I could probably do better IF I could find the right way to make a mold and the right stuff to cast.

DONNA - The whole other side of that fern ball hasn't been "ferned" yet! LOL!!! I probably could have gotten away with entering just the one side but that just didn't seem right to me. I can always enter it into the Better Late then Never Show come December! :)

I can't believe it didn't occur to me for you to use actual eyes you have as the original....perfect, and there is not shrinkage with the silicon....and yes it's fluid and you pour it slowly from the corner of your mold to help avoid creating air bubbles...
here is a link for casting resin
http://www.dickblick.com/zz335/20/
not too expensive..just follow directions and be careful, it's pretty toxic so keep well venilated

It really makes sense to do a bunch at one time...I'll try to remember to throw in a couple of my teeny clear cups that have all the volumes marked....
once you mix the resin in one of these little clear cups you can then use an eye dropper or something to fill all the eye molds....so you don't have to use a syringe...
I'll try to get some stuff together for you tomorrow....

YAY!!! Thanks bunches, Lauren!!!

The syringes don't have needles on them so they are like eyedroppers - they are just more reliable than eye droppers because of the plunger rather than the bulb ends.

I might have to use a little bit of polyclay or something to adhere the glass eyes to the tile for casting - they have rounded edges so won't glue flat to any surface but I think I can make this work! KEWL!!!!

Thanks for the link!!! :) :) :)

the silicone is so wonderful, it will curve around those rounded edges but you will still be able to pour into the mold anyway, the silicone can be cut away if you want or left there and you just pull the "skin" aside and release the poured resin....in other words, an undercut like that is no problem...I would definately clue the eyes down but maybe with silicone glue(like you use for sealing bathtubs)because then you can remove the eyes more easily even after they are glued once the mold is done and use them again for eyes...

or maybe I have it wrong...are you saying that the back of the eyes are rounded instead of flat or that the edges are rounded?

anyway, I'm going to send you some stuff so you can get started....

Wouldn't the silicon mold material stick to silicon that was used to glue the eyes down??

The glass eyes are like a half sphere and instead of having a flat back it "rolls" over to adhere to the wire upon which they are created.  - so the edge of that half shere is rounded. I can cut the wires off the back to make for a flater back but I don't know that it would be flat enough - will have to go look.

I'm excited about trying this!!!

The current eyes look really cute. Cat eyes may or may not be as cute but it certainly would be worth trying!! :) :)

no, I've used silicon glue on a bunch of molds and have never had that problem....of course, I spray a mold release on everything so that may have something to do with it lol....you can also mix 20% vaselline with 80% mineral spirits and paint that on, it acts as a great release...

maybe you could find something else that would work better, have a flat back...seriously, what about split peas? If you get a bag and look through it I'll bet you could find plenty that would be perfect...if they are the right size, that is....they may be totally different sizes...

can you think of something highly textured that has bumps in it that you could use? if you could, you'd have a bunch of eye molds that matched perfectly...did you say you'd tried making polymer clay molds of the eyes? they wouldn't necessarily be good to pour resin into but they may be just what you need to make a bunch of flat backed, perfect sized originals in polymer clay to use to make the molds with...

I'll be able to figure something out!

I did make a polyclay mold (with the polyclay molding material) but that got filled with resin and didn't work well. I didn't have any mold release and I believe I tried to use mineral oil which may have not been effective or just plain wrong. I still have some of the molding material that I can make another and then make polyclay "buttons" to mold with the silicon. I also have some plastic eyes that would have perfectly flat backs if I cut off the stems - I just like that rounded edge even though it probably never shows. ;)

'scuse me...i hate to interrupt 2 masters working out the details, but...

Jeanne, the fern ball is so pretty.  Is is a bead size, or how big is it?

OK carry on Lauren & Jeanne!

lol!! Yes - too big for that!

A smaller version is possible but it would be difficult to do the detail. That ball is silk on wool - might be a bit easier to do wool on wool. Silk will felt but its harder.

Jeanne, I loooove the balls! And the expressions on your prittens' faces are priceless.
The sheep are great too, love the colors. I am useless at anything fiber-related, so I am in awe...

Thanks Muriel!!! :) :) :)

Ebay is being most weird again - cats that aren't nearly as good as mine are getting bids around or higher than my starting price and I have no bids on Drake :(

I am going to have to either do a stated reserve or a higher starting price. :( Bummer!
