1) because this show is to celebrate you, our digital artists!
2) because there's already $20 in the kitty (well, technically $70, but for some reason, the chipin isn't showing our starting donations to the pool of funs) and with your help promoting this show, god willing there'll be a lot more than that for the winner!
3) because Melissa just promoted those free fractal tools in the EBSQ Blog and why should digital newbies get all the fun?

Come on--let's see some fractals!

And a bonus reason...

Because Amie said so.

Seriously - go create!!!!!

Vfem -> RE: top 3 reasons you should enter Fractals (2/2/2008 6:02:03 PM)

Well FINE, I'll go download some software and play since you INSIST![;)]

Vfem -> RE: top 3 reasons you should enter Fractals (2/2/2008 6:50:43 PM)

Ok while messing with one of the programs (Apophysis to be exact) I realize I am saving a '.flame' file. Now is this the file I need of how do I save a portion or finished product of the fractal as an image? I do see any other save option.

Screen shots?! I'm lost ...I should probably go find Kris or Carolyn!

Screen shots

I just did screen shots... and then for some of them I altered the color in photoshop too... so after a few hours of playing here is what I like so far...

help me narrow down to the maximum of 5... what's your favorite?

bromley2 -> RE: top 3 reasons you should enter Fractals (2/2/2008 8:37:38 PM)

Reason number 4) Fractals are just gorgeous and plain fun to do
Reason number 5) Fractals are probably the purest form of digital art there is....IMHO!!!

I am only a little psyched about this show and when my company is gone I am going to be all over it!!!

Shannon, you can change the extension and save the flame as a jpg.  Try this.  Save the parameters under File (I believe)...........then click ctrl-X on a PC.  This gives you a box...in there you can put in your sizes and quality settings and also you can change the extension of the file to be jpg.  Ok?  Hope that this helps.

Carolyn

Vfem -> RE: top 3 reasons you should enter Fractals (2/2/2008 8:45:20 PM)

Ok here's my first attempt! I think I may try one of the other programs... Something about the layout bothers me.

It reminds me of feathers on a bald eagle.

bromley2 -> RE: top 3 reasons you should enter Fractals (2/2/2008 11:06:23 PM)

Apophysis fractals are based on flame fractals only and produce wispy-like fractals unless you get a real handle on the program.  Try to move the trangles on a given fractal, don't just take what it gives you.  Try putting in extra triangles, that can really change things.

I love Apophysis and think the fractals that come out of that program are really fun.  Here is one that I arrived at by tweaking the numbers in the right hand section of the triangle window.......

You can come up with some really different results.

oh that's sweet!

I'm playing with that program now........

toucanne -> RE: top 3 reasons you should enter Fractals (2/3/2008 12:28:00 AM)

Kris, yours are awesome! And you haven't done this before? You rock, girl!
Free software, eh? I need to look into that...

88heather -> RE: top 3 reasons you should enter Fractals (2/3/2008 3:46:50 AM)

oh more for my to do list..

that does look like fun.. Can someone please add more hours to the day??  [:D]

defyinggravity -> RE: top 3 reasons you should enter Fractals (2/3/2008 5:46:50 PM)

You have to render your Apophysis fractals, not save them or they won't make very good images for anything but a postage stamp.

Click on File

Click on Export Flame

In the File Save box, give your image a path and a file name
eg. C:/ART FOLDER/APOPHYSIS ART/myfilename.jpg

make sure Maintain Ratio Aspect and Render boxes are checked

Start with 2000 for your width and it will set the Height per the image ratio
Leave it at 300dpi

Click OK

A black Windows/System32 window will open showing the progress of the rendering.

the larger you set the width the longer rendering will take, up to HOURS depending on your system and what else you are doing on the computer

At 2000 width the whole image renders at once
At 3000 width the image renders in thirds
At 4000 width the image renders in quarters

I haven't tried larger than that yet, but you get the picture

The flame file also gets saved during this process, so you will end up with two files, an image file that you have rendered, and the flame file that you can open later and work on some more and make an entirely different image Or you can render the existing image to a larger size, or change the background colour, or change the fractal colour scheme, etc, etc, etc......

very versatile software.
I hope this helps

bromley2 -> RE: top 3 reasons you should enter Fractals (2/3/2008 6:21:00 PM)

That helps a lot!  much clearer than mine!  Have you ever rendered using ctrl X?  It you do that you get a pop-up box and you can render larger than when you just go to the regular way of doing it.  Which version of Apophysis are you working with?  I don't know which one mine is, but it is one I downloaded after mine quit.

Apophysis and all fractal work is so addicting.

Carolyn

defyinggravity -> RE: top 3 reasons you should enter Fractals (2/4/2008 9:02:23 PM)

I'm working with APO 2.02.  I haven't tried that rendering method, will give it a try.

And you're right fractal work is addictive.

cheers ruth ;D

defyinggravity -> RE: top 3 reasons you should enter Fractals (2/4/2008 9:32:48 PM)

Hi Carolyn, checked out the Ctrl X and it brings up the same box I described above for rendering.

bromley2 -> RE: top 3 reasons you should enter Fractals (2/4/2008 10:45:56 PM)

Well, then it must be the same thing.  I don't know which version I am using, but when I hit the render button I get a different screen from the CTRL-X thingy.  Just a different thing I guess.

Carolyn

nelliex -> RE: top 3 reasons you should enter Fractals (2/5/2008 6:28:21 AM)

I've tried playing around with the 2nd one, but I feel like anything I come up with is just pure luck, not an artistic endevour. This is not to say anyone who works fractals is doing accidental art... just that I am..I think it's the same issue I have with abstract art, I can make a fairly pretty splotch but don't feel like I'm any better than the elephant they get to paint t-shirts @ African Lion Safari.
I think I may leave this up to the experts

defyinggravity -> RE: top 3 reasons you should enter Fractals (2/6/2008 10:49:47 AM)

I just downloaded the 2.07 beta of Apophysis!

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC AND WONDROUS!

Many more variations  than 2.02 and so much easier to make millions of changes.  AND you can remove the background and have a transparency.  Woohoo!

bromley2 -> RE: top 3 reasons you should enter Fractals (2/6/2008 12:06:55 PM)

So where did you get the 2.07?  I have 2.04 by Joel Faber and I downloaded it from SourceForge I believe.  One problem I have with it is it is so slow......frustrating sitting there watching the time tick away.

Carolyn
