Lisa- it's very effective.  I don't think I would have recognized your drum drawing had you not referenced it!

Okay, everyone follow Lisa's example and stretch yourself a little for an abstract piece!!

Here's mine!

Music 4 My Soul

Media: acrylic on stretched canvas
Dimensions: 12 x 36"
Date of Work: 2007

I am a fan of so many different kinds of music that I had to explore several of them along the course of this painting. I chose the extreme horizontal format to illustrate the progression and rhythm of music, from bright to soft and back again.

I let my brushes wander freely on the canvas as the music washed over me. Some shapes evoke musical elements and instruments; they just happened. I worked on this for several days over a period of a few weeks, listening to Coldplay, Springsteen, Dave Brubeck, Dylan, James Blunt and a few others.

This work was painted specifically for the abstract challenge "The Music in Me" on EBSQ's forums.

YEAH MURIEL!  I love long skinny paintings!  So much movement, which is perfect for a mucic themed piece.

Okay, so stinking excited!  So many good entries!   Let's see....  11, not including mine!  WOW!  And a few from artists not typically involved in abstracts, which I think is pretty cool.  Okay, anyone else?

The retro colors and the sense of fun reminded me of how a good pop song makes me feel.

Hi Iris! Another new artist...It's so nice to meet you! And Pop Music is a great title for this.  It's so bright and bouncy.

Inspired by the song ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ as performed by ‘IL DIVO’ on their Christmas album.

I have always loved this song, but it has always tugged on my heartstrings.  It brought out in music the feelings of desolation and hopelessness I often had as a child.  Feelings of being alone in a world, where ‘my’ dreams would never come true.  Il Divo’s rendition of ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ made this particularily clear to me and prompted me to do this painting.

Over the Rainbow features many elements of the song, SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW.

The dreary rooftops and chimney tops represent the weight of living in this mortal coil.
The sombre sky and clouds seem to smother all chance of dreams coming true and foreshadow troubles.
The rainbow features the ‘lullaby’ through which the singer heard of the land over the rainbow.
The bluebirds flying up to and above the rainbow symbolize hope and freedom to achieve our dreams.
Of course I added stars for wishing on.
The steady, dreary rain falling below the rainbow symbolizes the tears of those living in melancholy and wishing to find some escape from it and to have their dreams of happiness come true.  Many of those tears were mine in my younger years.
I gave the dreams that I dare to dream, physical form and allowed them to escape through the chimneys and rise above the rainbow where they can come true in the land of blue skies, bluebirds, wishes on stars and hope.

May all your dreams come true, ruth

Iris - your piece is sooo fun!  I think it might be my fav in your portfolio.... well, maybe tied with "Building Blocks."

Ruth - your explanation was great!  Really made your piece very clear!  I do have to say I really really like your Pony Express piece...  there is just a ton of movement!

Okay, so that wraps up the entry period.  Whew!  This is going to be so hard to judge!  Thanks a gob to everyone who entered!  I hope everyone who has gone through this thread has had a chance to read the explanations and developed a deeper appreciation of abstracts.  Now we wait for dear moo to set up the voting thingy (sorry Melissa, I do not have that button on my screen) and we’ll be set!
