(blushes) Thanks everyone!!! :) :) :)

I started doing a small cat while (ahem) still working on organizing the craft room and small is more difficult! We took a trip to Joann's yesterday and they had almost nothing but they did have some wool and it is so totally different than the wirey wool I got with the original kit. Also managed to pick up some of the thicker needles and am beginning to think that I should find myself a good basic book on needle felting beasties.

What I have learned is that the further into your wool you stick the felting needle the more firm the felting will be. If you just felt the surface you can create a good feltly exterior and still have a very soft beastie. The needle causes the threads to interact with the other threads and the scales on the threads bind which results in felt.

Needle felting is a dry felting technique but I'm sure it would be quite possible to combine wet felting techniques I just wouldn't use the felting needles on the piece while it was wet - they would probably rust.

Gathered up the bag I have saved of my Paw's fur (so soft) and once I learn how to make a nice small cat that looks like a cat I'm going to do one with his fur! :)

We have errands to run today so I'm going to go see if I can make my current cat project work before we leave. While building a fairly complete armature for my meese was very sucessful doing so for the much smaller cat has proved to be troublesome on the head in particular. I think I may be able to solve that - my armature was a combination of pipe cleaners and a stiffer poly foam but that poly foam is stil fiber and I think if I work at it long enough I can make it give where I need it to get so I can achieve that sort of blunted cone shape of a cat face. We'll see! :) It's making ears that is really troublesome! lol!!

BETH - have you ever worked with ALPACA wool?? It might not bother you the way sheeps wool does!

Nellie - I found a lot of kits on the web. Basically I just went for a cheap one that I knew would have enough supplies and instruction so that I could learn and then completely ignore them and do what I wanted! :)

Jeanne, your mousie made me want to try needle felting so today I went to Michaels and AC Moore to look for stuff to do it with.  I found some felting needles at AC Moore, but they didn't have any starter kits or books to tell me how to go about doing a project.  Michaels had nada...I was so disappointed because I was in the mood to jump in and get started. I guess I'll have to search and find something online. Ah well, so much for felting this weekend.

Oh sorry you weren't able to find supplies. :( I checked Michaels online and found no mention of needle felting at all but did find mention of it at JoAnn's - when I got to the store they had precious little - two types of needles and a very small selection of wool. They did say they expected to get more in eventually (whenever eventually is).

There are a lot of places that sell the supplies online - most offer kits too but there are some decent books out there. I'd stick to Alpaca wool (found places yesterday that offer that) given your sensitivity. There is an artist here on EBSQ that does needle felted paintings - let me go grab the link to her work - GORGEOUS stuff and she uses a bit of SILK in her work too! :)

http://www.ebsqart.com/Artists/cmd_2333_profile_portfolio.htm

The wool roving that I got at JoAnn's was very smooth and almost silky whereas the wool that came in my mouse kit is rough.

Just Google "needle felting" - toss in "supplies" and/or "kits" and/or "instructions" and/or "tutorials" - and you will find a ton of links and sources for supplies! It is worth while taking the time to compare prices at the different sites.

I have to go looking for supplies too - in order to find good eyes for tiny kitties and puppies that I want to make. Black beads work well enough for meeses. Eventually I will probably want more wool colors and probably more needle sizes but I have enough for the time being to try some more (when I get my craft room cleaned up - okay "more" cleaned up/organized).

I searching around - I have seen purses made with needle felting and wall hangings and all sorts of things - there's a lot you can do with this - you could take one of your paintings and redo it as a needle felted tapestry!! That would be so kewl!! And if you made two of the same they could make a purse to use with Lauren's handles! SWEET!!! LOL!!!!

Thanks thanks!!!

This one is almost 5" tall. And terribly difficult to get a good photograph being that she's white.
