I do use a tripod as I'm not steady enough otherwise. In the craftroom I have the forest setup on top of a chest of drawers - hung an artist proof of one of my paintings behind everything and used driftwood, silk plants and needle felted shrooms. On either side of the set up I have two gooseneck lamps. The bulbs are supposed to be light corrected but they're not any fancy bulbs. I made defusers for the lamps by making cardstock collars to go around the shade and covered the front with tracing paper. Beyond that I have my camera on autofocus - place the square in the middle of the view finder on the area I want focused, press the button to only half - move the view to where I want it, press the rest of the way down on the button to take the photo and HOPE! lol!!! My bro told me to set my F-stop down from what I was using - I do think that helps but I would never have known about that without him telling me. My camera does so many things that I don't even know about! There are lots of things I can't do - so I make a point of not doing them!! :) Makes the things I can do look all the better!!
