So to say that I can't appreciate a black & white painting is ridiculous.

Never said that. You don't have to like everything, and you don't have to take the time to understand everything. Minimalist art can be difficult to get your mind around, and if that's not the kind of effort you want to put out, that's your prerogative. I went to look at your art, and I liked it a lot. You know you put a lot of "effort" in your works, but someone who doesn't "get" abstract art might not see that or accept it when told.

When a painter achieves fame and a spot in a museum, it's for a reason. The effort is there. Whether it is applied while painting or before painting, while thinking of the concept, but I think artists should trust other artists that their motives are honest.

That just came out wrong ... never meant to insinuate that you said that. And I guess it's true what you say ... that Kelly painting might've taken him a long time to make. Everybody works on a different mental clock. I know that I, myself, am a very slow worker.

I guess that I am not a big fan of minimalist works, although I thought I was. Maybe I'm just an abstract lover in general. And I'm not saying that Kelly is a bad artist or a lazy artist. Every artist goes through periods just like most musicians ... experimenting & exploring. That's why we are doing this ... something you could never achieve locked in cubicle somewhere.

It's more for me on the kelly painting due to the artwork itself, not the artist. Like I said ... there's probably other works that he/she produced in a different emotional time that I can totally relate to.

It's strange that you mention appreciation of other artists ... there was a fellow artist showing at ARTEXPO that had some amazing abstract pieces using 3-D techniques & texturing. I talked for a while with him & this guy must've taken art philosophy in college because he rambled about his art for a while, explaining everything about his concept & creation. He had verses written for each piece ... a nice touch. He was so passionate; I so enjoyed talking to ... er, listening to him. Half the stuff he said didn't even make sense to me, but it was that gleam in his eye that made him a real joy to talk with. Then I Googled him when I got home .... he never mentioned that he used giraffe dung, animal fat & his own blood to create some of his work. Now I don't know what to think. So this one might also take a while for me to brood over .... whether it's something I understand or not. Google Seed Gallery New York .... artist Nya'. Tell me what you think.

I googled it and his work is beautiful.
This reminds me of the British/Nigerian painter Chris Ofili, the artist who had done a Virgin Mary with bits of elephant dung as part of the painting that led to an outrcry a few years ago. He regularly incorporated bits of natural found materials (including dung, which is used in rituals in Africa) to his works. Of cpurse, he got accused of throwing shit at the Virgin Mary, which of course was not the case at all, quite the opposite.

You cannot just look at one work by someone you don't know and decide all his/her work is worthless. Intellectual honesty goes both ways; unfortunately, this happens again and again with artists getting crucified in the press by people who judge them through one work and their own ignorance. It's the equivalent of getting quoted out of context.

And of course individuals have likes and dislikes, and work they can relate to better than others. We just shouldn't dismiss things without knowing the person's body of work and reasoning.
