toucanne -> Where to discuss issues (7/22/2007 12:54:46 PM)

There have been several threads these past few days dealing with politics in the forums and in shows.
There also seems to be some confusion as to what EBSQ will tolerate/encourage in the way of free exchange of ideas.
Politics and so-called controversial issues have always been an important source of inspiration and a catalyst for artists.
I personally find it unconceivable that such discussions might be banned from EBSQ.

This is a separate issue from Political Art and shows. As the forums now stand, there is a Current Events section of The Watercooler, and that looks like the only place where politics/issues can be discussed. It also appears some of us have been discouraged from posting about politics there.

As I have mentioned elsewhere, I suggest this section be renamed Contemporary Issues and given a disclaimer along the lines of the one for The Vent: not for the faint of heart, but no personal attacks, no name-calling.
This does not mean propaganda of any kind; what I envision is civil and intelligent debate, to better understand where the other side is coming from, maybe starting off with links to news items. No one would be forced to participate, of course. I really think such a section would be beneficial.

Current Events has usually only been used for current hiccups/funny happings/and everyonce in a while a serious news story and has never really (in my mind anyway) been a serious discussion of current world affairs/politics/issues ect....

*lite news* if you will.

A more indepth look might not hurt - I'm sure if you request one (new catagory in the watercooler - this way it would be stated up front exactly what's going on instead of trying to change a cat thats been around for a while.) Amie or whomever  will put it into effect - you could even Mod if you are so inclined to help keep the convo going.

Uhmmm, yes, that's what I thought this was... [:D][:D][:D]
Should I request elsewhere, you think? [sm=huh.gif]
Thanks, Kris, it s clearer now. [:)]
There has been enough discussion lately around this subject that I think we need to at least consider it and discuss it.[sm=cool.gif]

Muriel - do you mean request elsewhere for people to take note of this thread and chime in?? Probably so - I think a lot of members over look some forums and they may feel very deeply about what you have suggested and want to add their thoughts.

I'm all for their being a good place for people to exchange their thoughts/ideas on more controversial issues. That's not my personal thing but I know there are people who are passionate about such matters and having a place for such discussion would be good.

My only concern is I don't want to see that controversial discussion spill over to unrelated areas or just anywhere and everywhere - there is another board of which I am a member and I used to be quite active until a couple of members just never could manage to pass up any opportunity (real or imagined) to pull out their soapbox and pontificate. They have a place on those boards for such things but there is one member who drags it along every where he goes. I still visit there but I can't really partcipate because of that. I don't believe that would be the case here but I do have that concern.

toucanne -> RE: Where to discuss issues (7/22/2007 1:54:52 PM)

ROFL, I don't know what I'm doing!
I think maybe I was just thinking aloud... I wrote things down as they came to mind...
Rename it, or add to it, or leave the name as is but expand the possible discussions in it... [8D]

Exactly, Jeanne, and there is more of a danger of that happening if there isn't a place to do it!
I think no one who knows me here has any doubt as to what my leanings are, but I do try not to shove anything down anyone's throat. Which would be counterproductive anyway. [:)]

Harlan -> RE: Where to discuss issues (7/22/2007 2:56:09 PM)

Yeppers - we're on the same page! :)

I think there should be such a place - I'm not sure where it would go. Do you have ideas on that???

chinchillabutt -> RE: Where to discuss issues (7/22/2007 3:03:40 PM)

Working with shards, I have to be especially careful ... [sm=rolleyes.gif]

gillie -> RE: Where to discuss issues (7/22/2007 6:26:00 PM)

I answered this elsewhere, but if you all want to discuss politics in the current events forum, have at it. Just don't kill each other in the process. And please label your threads accordingly, ie, rant against republicans, democrats, bush, the green party, hillary, the war iraq, etc.

toucanne -> RE: Where to discuss issues (7/22/2007 7:28:00 PM)

Cool, thanks.
Actually I wasn't thinking so much about rants, but civil debate. [:)]
