Happy happy birthday Liam (did you know that Liam came from the name William?)  Not sure if from Gaelic or not.

Personally I thinks the portraiture and Human form should be separtated.

Granted they are both dealing with the body but they are wayyyyyy diffferent.

This way one who deals with faces as a speciality doesn't have to search through threads anatomy.

This is a really good idea......

Happy Bday Liam.

Interesting point, Kris!! We really need to keep bouncing these ideas around to find out what really will be useful to us!!

I don't know what this forum software is capable of - I wonder if it is possible to have a forum work like this: (really bad ascii drawing to follow)

Forum Human Form and Portraits
Shared topics  |
                   |
             -------------------------
             |                                 |
   Subforum FORM                     Subforum Portraits

(I hope this comes out as I tried to draw it - guess I will know in a moment! ;))

(Later comment - I don't like this idea at all - lol)

Yup, they are.
But there we go again dividing things. In some cases the topics may overlap. Take this portrait of my granddaughter.
It is undeniably a portrait, I think, but also a study of the shape of a baby. Portraiture is not just the face.

I would like to see us find more ways to combine things but I fully understand the concern about trying to locate (as with this example) threads on the human body and not on human face which is why I wondered about "subforums.

There has got to be a way that we can bring more things together to stimulate discussion and still make it easy to find information and discussions that are genre specific.

Let's ask the question this way then:

In what ways are portraiture and human form similar? And how are either or both similar to other genre or whatevers?

Both of these can deal with painting flesh - learning to paint flesh is the same to me as learning to paint an apple which goes into color theory and technique and ....?

Getting a human body to look right to me is the same as getting a pear to look right or a fire engine to look right.
It's about understanding proportion and relationships and accurate observation of how things really are (or aren't if you're off into abstract or surreal or whatever).

Just bouncing ideas and thoughts!!

I understand that, but don't see the necessity of subdividng everything to death. People need to be able to find what they're looking for, but after that, keeping things simple may help avoid the deserted topics we are running into elsewhere.

Exactly - I think when we subdivide we loose the stimulus and activity that is gained by combining and the subdivision ends up not being as helpful as the combining.

I think it is all the divisions that have made so many of those forums inactive - we need to figure out what they have in common!!

Have you ever seen Deborah Butterfield's horses? Bedsprings, old fencing, anything and everything but the anatomy is always spot on. www.gallerypauleanglim.com/butterfield.html but doing a Google Images search gives better results.

Thanks Jeanne! She is truly an amazing artist. I saw one of her horses in person once; they are life-size. It was barbed-wire one I think, and it was breathtaking.

Then why not just "the human form"

so anyone who needed advice in any genre knows exactly where to look....

yeah and nudity marked nudity then that's covered as well.

(I never used the area because I didn't want to plug up the section with boobies.........*sigh* I would be more likely to use it if it was "the human form"......I'm a freak that way.)

How I love you gals/guys!!!!!!!

I had closed down my machine and was trying to get to sleep and everything just kept nagging at me and nagging at me so here I am again - and I do not claim to be any less wonky than I was earlier this evening.

Here we go:

Kris - it was SO important to me (as it always will be) to make obvious my respect and affection for you that my first reaction to your post was to be totally open to it and as a result - I dropped the ball. (which isn't a bad thing - it is ALWAYS wise to keep an open mind and consider suggestion seriously)
Muriel - thank you for picking up the ball
Kris - thank you for doing so like wise

Here's the deal - art as I see it

Painting(drawing, sculpting, weaving, casting...) portraits is no different from painting human bodies is no different from painting seascapes is no different from painting flowers, polish pottery, faeries, cats, ........ Doesn't matter

It is all about
COMPOSITION
LINE
FORM
COLOR
LIGHT
OBSERVATION

Have I missed anything (and believe me, I certainly can at this time of night with this little sleep)?? If I have - PLEASE toss them in!! :D

All art comes down to some very basic building blocks - everything is built with those building blocks - it can become hugely complex or it can be very simple and every other variation but we're all using the same building blocks - and THAT IS OUR COMMON GROUND!!!

I fully appreciate that we HAVE to be able to offer a place for someone who wants specific help with doing human form or portraits or seascapes or working with watercolor, or casting iron - whatever is needed we have to see to it that there is a place that it belongs and we WILL DO THAT - I'm sure we'll find a wonderfully brilliant way to do that

but we have to COMBINE - we have to identify those building blocks which are endlessly fascinating, familiar and important to all of us in all our many artistic visions - there is no art that cannot be discussed from the starting point of those basic building blocks!

Whew!!

Okay - again - I have been up too long, too stimulated (which is wonderful) so I hope I am still making some sort of sense. If not - slap me silly!!!

Bless all of you - you are the BEST!!!!!!

I think portraiture and human form are one - yes someone doing just faces doesn't need the body, but doing the body you need the head.  Keeping them together keeps the human as a cohesive whole.

The two subjects can be discussed together and do overlap, and everyone would learn something about the other.  e.g. a portrait isn't just the face, usually encompasses the neck, shoulders and at least part of the arm and chest, already it is going into the human form.

Get the face just right and if you don't know how the neck, shoulders and arms are proportioned/angled then the painting is off.  Just my opinion though.
