I made the imbedded picture using illustration techniques.  OK  OK...I confess, I used a little bit of a stippling  film to create the shadows on the bark on the tree on the left, YES I was lazy, it looked good.  Anyway can I still call this piece "pen and ink" in shows or if I try to sell it in the world of "Fine art?"?  Do I have to call it mixed media?  I did this years ago and the paper has aged.  I'm afraid if I try to peel it off and "hand make" the dots the paper might end up looking really funky so I just want to leave it.  Is it ethical to decribe it as "pen and ink"?  Any manga artists out there?  How do you list pieces for galleries or to sell?  "It's  pen and ink, except for the textures I cut out and stuck on?"

You could call it mixed media, or pen and ink with applied texture film, or whatever you want that would convey what it really is. There's no shame in using other materials if they help you achieve the look you want.

Thepiece looks nice, but could you post it a little larger so we can really see? Thanks, Vikki.

Is the zip-a-tone obviously zip-a-tone (i.e., has the film yellowed or can you see that it was cut out to fit the shape?)

I agree that there's no shame in using graphic arts materials, but sometimes they're geared towards reproduction of the piece rather than making it look like finished work (think of original comics pages, with the blue line & white out). If you're not sure, show it to someone who doesn't know anything about it and see if they notice. That or post a larger photo for us here.

No can't get it the right size, sorry.  I'll put it in my portfolio. I'm not concerned that I used ziptone.  I was an illustrator when I made it it was for reproduction.  Now I want to sell the original as "fine art".  I cannot remove it, it's not a solution if people have a problem with it.  I just don't know how to list it or what to call it.

Since you used the zip then I'd definitely think it would be mixed media. If the zip wasn't obviously zip then you might be able to call it pen & ink, but either way you're better off being straightforward about it.

You could call it a Original Artist Comp sketch and sell it that way. I agree though your pics need to be bigger. Your work is very compelling and it naturally coaxs the view to want to see more. Do you photo , or scan them?

Mostly I photo, 'cause they're usually too bid for my scanner.  Whenever I try to load bigger, the files are always too large.  What size in in. and output resolution to you save to show?

With the exception of my ebsq portfolio, almost everything I have online is 72dpi and optimized for faster loading. The actual dimensions vary, but I like to keep the images between 5 & 8 inches at the largest. In our ebsq portfolios we can load higher resollution images (I forget how big) so that people can click on the image to enlarge it.

I have a very hard time photographing larger pieces, if at all possible I'll scan them in pieces & then stitch together in photoshop - have you tried this or are your pieces too large even for that?

Some, but whenever I try to do that it's like there's a shadow line when you try to butt the edges.  The pieces don't match in "background lighting".  Cheap scanner I guess.  The last one I had used to do that.  This one sucks.
Being the poorest of the poor sucks.  I just want this art endeavor to pay for itself.

It takes a little work but you can get rid of that shadow, it involves cutting away a strip of where the layers overlap. I've also fixed the lighting problem but I don't remember offhand what I did - I have to scan a couple of larger pieces later tonight & if it works I'll tell you what I did.
